St. Lou is a known area for crime and some gangs. It has been the location of one or two Crimeland docs.
St. Louis has had alot of gang activity going back to the early 20th century. Pillow Gang. Egan's Rats. Nowadays St. Louis has the Boys of Destruction and the Horseshoe Posse.
That is barely above the national average, which is 13%.
Huntsville, Alabama is 30% Black and has a lower murder rate(and less violent crime) than Tulsa does. Both are red cities in red states. Why does Tulsa have more violence, in spite of a lower percentage of Blacks?
In addition, violence can occur in some of the hollows and remote parts of Appalachia. Areas that are hard to get to, where it takes a while for the police to reach.
Someone gets murdered in the city, and especially when it's gang related, finding the body isn't difficult. Someone in a remote hollow gets shot to death, there are plenty of places to hide a body.
The entire state of West Virginia, with a population of about 1.8 million people, had 112 murders in 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The city of St. Louis, with a population of about 318,000, had 205 murders in that same year.
I'm not saying that violence doesn't occur in Appalachia, because clearly it does. But you're a whole lot less likely to be murdered in West Virginia than you are in St. Louis.
