NYC relocations accelerating at ‘substantial’ pace, local movers say

Even as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has leveled off in recent weeks, moving companies say they remain inundated with requests from people leaving New York City.

By July 15 Oz Moving was booked to capacity for the remainder of the month, and while it is always busy over the summer, 2020 marked the first time in 27 years the company was unable to take on additional jobs so early on.

“Insanely busy and for the last 3 months we couldn’t keep up with the demand,” Sapir said.

And they are invading N Jersey en masse.

Houses sell in bidding wars.

>10% and <15% of the cars in the local stores are from NYS. The normal number is around 5%.

Of course no one's bothered to check with movers around the country and/or the world about how many are wanting to move to NY. NYC has, does, and always will attract many people wishing to live there.

FWIW for the time being (and yes anecdotal) but the GCs I talk to, they are stopping projects once they are dried in. Demand for anything in Manhattan especially is very very low.

I do not pretend to know what the situation will be in 6 months.

What is not good for NYC as a whole is that the people that are moving are the people that can afford to move. They have the means and chances are a job they can take with them with telecommuting.

I wonder who will be left to pay the high rents and keep everyone employed that used to cater to them?

We should all be worried that the exodus will bring "blue" bloods to areas that are generally Conservative and once settled they will start looking to make changes to their new town/city.

Here is another thought. When Manhattan becomes a ghost town Trump and people like him will be able to move in and buy property for pennies on the dollar...

I don't understand. New York city would be the city where one is least likely to catch coronavirus because so many people there have already had it. They're not at herd immunity levels there, but it's the closest you can find to that anywhere in this country.

It’s not just Covid. It’s the riots, the no-bail policies, releasing prison inmates early, etc. I moved out 5years ago, but one native resident friend who still lives there says she’s been a little scared lately. This is a tough Latina from Queens saying “scared”, so I imagine it must have gotten fairly bad.

I just hope they don’t bring with them their Democratic Party socialist voting ways. If it didn’t work in New York then why try it in another community?
