Perhaps the US could go for being better instead of merely different? Because right now we're paying more and getting less.
And you don' have to have "government running everything". Go Swiss. Go German. (The Swiss like guns and money, that should appeal.)
Well if people got upset over paying a tax penalty for not having health insurance I'm sure the German plan would go over like a lead balloon. Be careful what you wish for......

The government health insurance scheme is administered by 108 Krankenkassen and they charge the same basic rate of 14.6 % plus a possible average supplemental rate of 1.1 % of your eligible gross salary with a cap set at a maximum monthly income of 4,688 Euros (2020 figures).
What happens if you don't have health insurance in Germany?
The treatment would be paid for by your last Krankenkasse (or the local AOK if you were never in the system). Yet, you owe the full amount of health insurance premiums, plus 1% interest per month, and you won't be able to get back into normal care unless you pay them off in full or declare bankruptcy.
