Well, this is how I see it. I think back in the old days, it was shameful to have sex out of wedlock. Anyone who ever had sex likely didn't talk about it. And yes, condoms were much harder to come by. However, there is something else to consider. Sexual abuse was one of those things that many kids were expected to keep their mouths shut about. I'm willing to bet some of those girls under 14 who were getting pregnant might have been raped. In those days, I can't think of any other reason a 12 year old girl would get pregnant other than rape. Also, more kids continue school than back then. I'm willing to be some of those middle school-age girls getting pregnant had quit school by age 11.
