I don't know why so many politicians and political influencers (including us CD folk) are even obliquely suggesting that it is okay to hurt people because we disagree with them. I am guilty of it myself. It is a sick twist on current events. I believe we are better than this, but I do not believe a nominal "call for unity" is the antidote. I am not sure what is.
It's pretty simple, really. They fear black and brown people. Women working outside the home is another irritant to the Grand Old White Male Party, but they had to pivot on that with the economy in shambles.

It is clear that the GOP has a very large number of extremists in the ranks of its Senate and House delegations. The mental state of many of these is rightfully questionable based on their past views and comments. How is it that people like this are getting elected in some places?
Pretty simple really - they reflect their constituents. This is how our representative government works (or doesn't work). The basic assumption is that the average citizen is rational and will never choose a representative that would work against our Constitution and would never be self destructive or embrace lunacy.
What we are seeing today is that this basic assumption is flawed. The under-educated and the deluded can find one another and form a coalition of ignorance in order to get people like this elected. After all they got Trump elected, so not certain why this would be so surprising.
