Frozen wind turbines in Texas caused some conservative state politicians to declare Tuesday that the state was relying too much on renewable energy. But in reality, the lost wind power makes up only a fraction of the reduction in power-generating capacity that has brought outages to millions of Texans across the state during a major winter storm.

An official with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said Tuesday afternoon that 16 gigawatts of renewable energy generation, mostly wind generation, was offline. Nearly double that, 30 gigawatts, had been lost from thermal sources, which includes gas, coal and nuclear energy.
In short, the outages were caused mostly by shutdown of gas, coal, and nuclear energy sources.

This begs the question. Why do conservatives hate renewable energy so much? Why do they get such a hard-on for non-renewable sources? Do conservatives actually believe that we have unlimited supply of fossil fuel?

I don't think anyone has said the wind turbines have caused the power issues. They were supposed to be the back up system. Womp.. womp...

People don't hate renewables just to hate renewables.

They are being forced on people either by government fiat, or peer pressure from rabid liberals.

If they actually worked and provided a stable source of energy, you wouldn't have to force them upon anyone.

And then there's the whole Obama green energy fiasco where his friends got a bunch of government money only to end up bankrupt, and I don't believe they ever had to pay back anything... see Solyndra.

Also - climate change is a hoax. So when people tie renewable energy to manmade global warming & climate change... let's just say that it isn't a resume' enhancement. They would do better selling it as an alternative energy source and making it a better product.

Because it's being touted as the solution all the world's problems when it's falling far short.

We don't.

No, that's why many of us want nuclear.

There are a few major reasons why "green/renewable energy/technology" is such a farce

-They are oil/fossil fuel derivatives. It takes tremendous amounts of oil, coal, and natural gas to mine the materials, manufacture, transport, install, maintain, and dispose of all the "green/renewable" infrastructure. Green/renewable technology cannot exist without an underlying abundant oil/fossil fuel economy.

-Wind and solar energy is far too diffuse and intermittent to power a global, techno-industrial civilization.

-We don't have enough minerals and resources available to us to build all this so called green and renewable technology.

-There is nothing green or renewable whatsoever about electric vehicles, solar panels, or wind turbines. Once they reach the end of their useful life, they must be thrown into landfills.

This is why green/renewable energy can never work, at least in the context of a techno-industrial global civilization. It is the biggest farce is the history of man- nothing more than a delusional attempt to overthrow the laws of thermodynamics.

Agreed. The northeast and many eastern coastal states do quite well by generating more than 30% of their power from nuclear power plants.

Many other states (including Texas) use nuclear power as well, but at a very small scale in comparison. The northeast has done quite a good job at planning for sustainable or partially sustainable power.

Fox news was pusing this story to their viewers. Seems the network just can't seem to report the truth.

You are partionaly correct. The frozen wind turbines should have been shut down to avoid icing up. That was a matter of flipping a switch. The real issue was that power plants (which are not controlled by ERCOT (Texas Power Grid) we’re not “Winterized”. It’s not a Law in Texas to properly Winterize Power plants, it’s only a Recommendation. I expect that to change, the reality is that it’s only necessary to Winterize every 10-15 years or so & it’s expensive to do so ... so the Power Plants (coal, Nuclear, Natural Gas) often neglect to do so.

A lot of people made serious mistakes - not just the Wind Fields, but all the Power Generators.
Without the power Generators of all types being properly prepared .... it’s a disaster.

As usual, the Media and Political Pundits go off on tangents to support whatever they choose to support politically, without really delving in to all of the issues.

Wind Turbines can “ ice up”, but we had mainly a wind/snow/freeze event ... not an ice storm event.
Shutting them down when it began would have helped, but the main issue was lack of Winterizing all the other Power sources. As usual ... people cut corners and the Citizens are the ones who suffer.

The Media aids in the suffering to boost ratings and promote an agenda. It’s all disgusting.

All of that turns to ice on freezing turbine blades. Including the drizzle and freezing rain that also fell.

All of the above is not just wrong, it's flat wrong.
