Completely 100% wrong.
You really need to read more of this thread:

In 1880:

The literacy rate of Italy was 38.4%.
The literacy rate of France was 72.8%.
The literacy rate of Germany was 92.0%.
The literacy rate of Spain was 31.4%.
The literacy rate of the UK was 82.7%
Though it's not listed, you can be sure Ireland's was probably similar to Italy's or, at best, France's.

By comparison the US was 83.0%.

The best nation back then was more illiterate than Mexico is now.

Just curious. Can foreign terrorists just walk right in now? Are they checking for guns and bombs and ammo or just allowing anyone in without checking for arms?

I guess all they'd need to do is go where there is no fence or checkpoint and walk on over to later terrorize our country. We could have another 911 soon?

Will airports still check IDs or has that been cancelled also? We can take guns now on airplanes right but it has to travel with the luggage?

And these jobs are being filled by American-born workers. Also, there was obviously a need for janitors, landscapers, roofers, etc. in your beloved 1910s, along with the tens of thousands needed to work in mills. Those aren't new industries.

No, not all jobs require lots of education these days. Why do you think all these immigrants are filling roles as landscape workers, roofers, maids, janitors, fast food workers, and so on, and so forth? It's because there are tons of those kinds of jobs available nowadays.

The funny thing about you xenophobic conservatives is that you're actually all elitists, in spite of constantly complaining about elitism! You don't like all these low-skilled, blue-collar (or "new collar") workers because they give you the eebie-jeebies, or something. Instead you want nothing but pointy-headed nerds coming here to create some sort of elitist Perfect Society.

If they can get enough drugs thru the border as they do, (to keep the entire nation supplied at all times)...they can most definitely get guns, bombs, and anything else they like, into the country.

Some, but there aren't enough American-born workers to fill those jobs.

Yes there were some of those back then, just as there are still some factory jobs nowadays. But just as there are fewer factory jobs nowadays, there are more service jobs nowadays to make up for it.

They end up there because they chose not to attain a skill. And in some cases, the choice was made for them due to life circumstances.

Many come in on planes with a Visa. Then vanish. The Feds have not been able to find hundreds of thousands on overstayed Visa. How hard they look is another thing. I know of one from Honduras who overstayed a student Visa 25 years ago. He has a good business making 150K a year. I wouldn't hire him but plenty do.

It does not matter what happened a century or more ago. What is important is what is happening now. I believe someone has also pointed out above that there are people from some countries who do not speak even Spanish. They cannot communicate with anyone.

Do you actually know any one in the trades ? If you happen to know some owners of roofing companies, concrete guys or masonry, why don't you ask them what they think of illegals.

It has nothing to do with xenophobia or being conservative.
