None of my snowbird friends travelled this winter.
No question domestic and Canadian snowbird migration was off this year. Canadians faced a 14 day quarantine, both ways, not that the US followed up. When there is an expectation a snowbird is going to spend nearly a month inside during quarantine, many chose to just stay home.
I just talked with my Canuck neighbor who is here for the winter. He is afraid to go back cuz the covid is so widespread, but won't get a shot which is readily available to him around here out of fear. Between a rock and a hard head, I guess.
Your neighbor has a much greater risk of infection in the US than Canada.
That poster is likely referring to a story that some person who had to go to VT for a relatives funeral came back and was forced into one of the hotels. They charged like $3500.00 for one night. I do not know if the story is true.
It was Portugal.
She apparently thought she would be exempted from mandatory quarantine upon return because it was a funeral, not recreational.
Canada has a case fatality rate much higher than the US. What that means if someone gets infected, they are more likely to die in Canada than in the US. The vaccines are proven to be safe and effective. Early on the US contracted to by enough doses to vaccinate every person with millions of doses to spare.
The proverbial vaccine cupboard was dry when Biden Admin took over.
Trump Admin took a pass on options to order more Pfizer last summer despite the 6-7 lead time. It ordered another round of 100 million doses on 12/23 with delivery in late June- late July.
Merck dropped out of trials as their vaccine was not as effective as the Pfizer and Moderna.
There is still not enough supply to meet demand. It’s like hitting the lottery in many areas.
Oh, you mean like the President who banned/restricted travel from China even though many Democrats called him "racist" for doing so?
Or like the President who cut the red tape which allowed vaccines to be approved in only 10 months when it usually takes 2-3 years?
No matter what Trump did some Democrats complained no diff than what some Republicans did during the Obama years and are once again for Biden. It’s noise.
Trump dragged his feet on travel restrictions with Europe, the source of most infections in NYC and beyond.
EVERY country accelerated trials and approvals. It would have been really weird had the US not done so. Trump did what every other country did.
Canada was not slow in ordering vaccines. Date purchase agreements were signed:
Moderna - July 24, 2020 (Canada was first country in the world to sign with Moderna)
Pfizer - Aug 1, 2020
J&J - Aug 24, 2020
Novavax - Aug 27, 2020
Sanofi - Sep 11, 2020
AstraZeneca - Sep 24, 2020
Medicago - Oct 22, 2020
This process is for returning Canadians. Americans and foreigners from other countries, with certain exceptions, aren’t allowed to enter Canada right now.
Canada is not so rich. I believe their budget deficit for 2021 is about $400 billion dollars. And since our economy is 12 times bigger than theirs that is a problem. The Canadian dollar is not a safe haven.
And as others have said their vaccine rollout is a dumpster fire. Now they have to lock down again. So much for socialism.
What does the situation have to do with socialism?
There was to plan/ strategy for vaccine rollout in the Trump Admin, beyond allocating to states and letting states figure out the rest.
Biden ( who I did not vote for) published a 200 page strategy within days of inauguration. It called for federal funding of state and county rollout, use of FEMA and the military to augment state initiatives. It also called for invoking the Defense Act to produce doses.
It understood Publix and Walgreens were never going to be able to vaccinate the masses as soon as doses became available. It called for mobile vaccination trucks in rural areas. It also called for safely reopening schools and domestic travel.
It called for 100 million vaccines in his first 100 days. People said it could not be done. The goal was met in day 58 and then Biden upped the goal to 200 million. And it looks reachable.
