It's not quite that simple. About $20 of every cable TV bill goes to professional sports teams even though the subscriber may not even have access to watch those sports. That works out to over $19B (yes, BILLION) per year, which heavily supports athlete salaries.

There is no opting out, so it's more like theft from our wallets than voting with our wallets. Stadium revenues (tickets, concessions, merch, etc.) is only 38% of the NFL's revenue. Basically, the rest of us are subsidizing football fans via cable TV bills. As popular as football is, there are vastly more people who aren't fans than are.
