Honestly I do not think that is the case. I think most American's could care less what your sexuality is. I had to get dressed in a locker room where there were a couple of gay officers. Never a problem. I didn't even think twice about it. Maybe if someone is insecure about their sexuality it might be an issue. However I just do not see where this is an issue.
"Took the girlfriend to that new cool restaurant": Small talk.
"Took the boyfriend to that new cool restaurant": Advertisement of sexual habits.
False equivalency
The answers you listed are two answers to a question asked, and contrary to your assertion both indicate advertisement of sexual habits.
One is talking about their sexual preference as being heterosexual. One is talking about their sexual preference being homosexual. If this fictional person didn't want to advertise their preference they also could have just said: "Went to a new cool restaurant".
It's not surprising. On the show Hard Knocks he was giving very detailed financial advice on a white board to other players.
