Social Security is doing something the private enterprise system could do, but they would not make enough money at it. Private enterprise would skim a profit off of Social Security and keep some of those hard earned dollars from the rightful recipients. The system we have today is owned by the people who use it: the American people. We all share the risk and the rewards, it is insurance against destitution in one's sunset years.

When Social Security was introduced, it was fought tooth and nail by the Republicans, and the Republican Party has had a longstanding goal of dismantling the program. What was the argument the Republicans made against Social Security in the 1930's?

The same argument they make against national health care today.

Father Coughlin was calling for Nationalizing the banks. There were other proposals from Townsend, Bigelow and Sinclaire. Coughlin, Townsend and Long joined together to try and keep Roosevelt from being elected.

The Republican party has not changed!
At it's core it does exactly what the rich donors want it to do, year in and year out. Those wedge issues which may have attracted you (and I, at one time) to the party are window dressing. The party has always been something of a chameleon.
The very rich and international corporations need a mouthpiece, they deserve a mouthpiece. They are entitled to have an organization which represents their best interests, the Republican party is that, and it does the job very well.
The problem for this type of organization is that it is not very popular with the ordinary folks, so they emphasize wedge issues, things that can break up the working classes into factions and steal some of the working people's votes. That is the whole purpose of a wedge issue, to have us fighting one another while the rich and international corporations push forward their own agenda. The wedge issue has been a specialty of the Republican Party for generations. If there isn't one close at hand to exploit, they will invent one.
For anyone who has seen the party act schizophrenic at times ('establishment' Republicans ... 'Tea party' Republicans ... "neo-Cons' ... 'Trumpies' ) this is why.
