Even if severe cases really are entirely among people with pre-existing conditions and the elderly, the virus still places too much of a strain on our healthcare system to simply let it go endemic. Since half the country won't accept a vaccine, what else do we do? Do we just stay locked down forever, as long as certain types of gatherings like churches aren't affected?
The same way we ended The Spanish Flu. And a vaccine had nothing to do with it.
What you are insinuating is sterilising immunity - the current vaccines do not provide that level of immunity. There was a nasal administered one that worked well in the nasal passages, but failed to provide sufficient protection in the body.
The current vaccines will help your body fight off an infection. You still get infected - the vaccination may prevent further infection at the point that it spreads beyond the first few cells. If your body responds quickly enough, you will have less viral replication in your body. With lowers levels of viral particles, you are less likely to transmit the virus because you are expelling lower concentrations of viral particles in your breath. You are also less likely to test positive for an infection because you do not meet the threshold for the tests.
But the current vaccines turn the infection from a potentially deadly disease to a mild illness. The current vaccines greatly reduce viral load which greatly reduces the spread of the disease to people who cannot be vaccinated. Over time, if everyone was vaccinated, that would to a large extent eliminate the virus.

Their anti-vaccine campaign will result in some deaths and they will have blood on their hands because of it.
Perhaps the hostility is due to the authoritarians parroting the narrative that those that chose not to vaccinate (perhaps because the vaccines has injured/killed their parents) should not work, have access to children, should die out so that those who chose to vaccinate life happily ever after and visit France.

Actually, someone invested a LOT of money to dig out the original influenza virus in 2007. From Alaska graveyard in permafrost. It's open public knowledge, just hush hush about. Google it. Virus then was sequenced and synthesized. It is one of them viruses that gives cytokine storm. Sounds familiar? Well, it should, as SARS2 like virus was then synthesized in 2014 and developed so that it can be infected to humans. This is also public knowledge, Google it. Connecting dots?
