This isn't about giving people the feels. It's about whether they are safer. Since a roomful of vaccinated people--some of whom might be symptomatic---can spread the virus, she isn't necessarily safer. It isn't worth disenfranchising a large portion of the city, including POC and those with medical contraindications to the vaccine, to assuage anxiety. They also need to show ID along with the passports, and the NYC ID requirements are not attainable by many undocumented immigrants because they require 4 points of documents.
Many business owners in NYC say the mandates will destroy them. Our business is part of a large coalition of NY metro fitness professionals who are against the passports. I'm not surprised the news media chose to focus on a business in favor of this. Throughout this pandemic, the news media has advocated for lockdowns and other measures that favor the professional, white elites and harm small businesses, the vulnerable and disenfranchised.
We vaxxed our way out of smallpox, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, etc. But I think people were smarter back in the day... they vaxxed themselves and their children. And made all those vaccines mandatory for attending public school. Yeah, people definitely used to be smarter.

no, there are plenty of people still living who were never required to be vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella, or pertussis. and after 50 yrs who knows if there is any lasting immunity to the polio vaccine.
And those who are covid free, cannot spread the virus at all! And yet, in NYC, the covid free are being forced to submit to the tyranny of government or be banned from enjoying public accommodations!
Your post suggests you really don’t have a clue what the fight is about. It’s about being an American, and resisting government actions which violate and tramples upon our most precious inalienable rights, and doing so under the guise of the general welfare.
We have been amply warned about allowing our government to snuff out our rights inch, by inch . . .
“When a free people submit to oppressive acts, passed in violation of their constitution, for a single day, they have thrown down the palladium of their liberty. Submit to despotism for an hour and you concede the principle. John Adams said, in 1775, Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud. It is the only thing a people determined to be free can do. Republics have often failed, and have been succeeded by the most revolting despotisms; and always it was the voice of timidity, cowardice, or false leaders counseling submission, that led to the final downfall of freedom. It was the cowardice and treachery of the Senate of Rome that allowed the usurper to gain power, inch by inch, to overthrow the Republic. The history of the downfall of Republics is the same in all ages. The first inch that is yielded to despotism __ the first blow, dealt at the Constitution, that is not resisted is the beginning of the end of the nations ruin.” ___ The Old Guard, a monthly journal devoted to the principles of 1776 and 1787.
And, let us not forget the wise words of James Madision:
" I believe that there are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations." ___ Madison, Elliot`s Debates, vol. III, page 87

Keep fighting. It's working. The federal gov't is now agreeing to pay for the testing they are mandating due to pressure. Unions are fighting the whole idea so mandates are not a done deal.
Someone started a thread a few weeks ago about an outrageous policy where a $750 Covid fee is being implemented for the unvaccinated at a college in WV. I live in the state and it just came out they scrapped the fee due to pressure.
The state's university has no mandate but is requiring students and faculty to register their vaccination status. More than 10K students and faculty had not done so by the deadline. What are they going to do kick all those students out and lose the tuition? LOL No way. Money talks. People DO have power.
The group that will have the hardest time with a mandate; hospital workers are still fighting even in NY. It's enough to get attention. From the NYT today.
----------------- A Hospital Finds an Unlikely Group Opposing Vaccination: Its Workers
At the ultrasound department, Mr. Matland said, three-quarters of staff have told him they remained undecided about getting the vaccine. At the radiology department at the hospital’s southern campus, Mr. Matland said four out of 10 staff were unvaccinated and “many will not cave.”
“Losing four of us in radiology would cripple the entire department,” he said.

Re the bolded italics above. This is NOT about our American rights. It is about Public Health. Maybe you should read up on public health in America.
Or, considering your attitude, maybe you would also like to stop public health inspections of restaurants for cleanliness and safe handling of food. Do you consider such inspections as stepping on the rights of restaurant owners?
Well, you certainly have made a number of assertions, including those which are unsubstantiated and insulting.
In answer to government "inspections", as one who has actually researched our constitution's framing and ratification debates, our system recognizes state "inspection" laws.
I am depending on modern science to come up with a better vaccine. The scientists today have a much better understanding of infectious disease than those who developed those "traditional" vaccines years ago. Never say never.
