The pass/fail grading system has been around for a while now, so really I'm not sure this is anything new. But students who don't learn to do homework will be woefully unprepared for college.
None of the kids impacted by this will ever go to college.
Schools in some areas under fire for low graduation rates, for a very long time have tried using any trick in the book to try to just pass kids through so as to show improvement and progress.
You would see major network exposes on this disservice and showing kids graduated despite barely being able to read (or not at all). This was especially a problem in large urban education systems with large unions etc.
The irony here is that it used to be racist to not provide a good education to some groups of students and just pass them thru the system. Now, it's racist NOT to do that.
Here is a story from NPR about a girl from the dominican republic that they just passed thru....before it became anti-racist to rubber stamp kids thru.
I have a solution. Only have one grade, an "A". Any other grades are "racist".
This works out well. No one is offended. Everyone is equal. The students feel good. The parents are proud of their kids for getting top grades. The schools are happy because "their students are learning". Less friction between teachers and principals because every single student is a success because they are "learning". Students are competitive to get into better universities because of their perfect GPAs. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
Perhaps I should get a Nobel Prize for coming up with this outstanding solution. But I'll settle for a "Participation Trophy". That trophy better have an "A" on it.
When you lower minimum standards, you are guaranteed to produce an inferior product.
If kids cannot achieve proficiency, they need to be failed. Otherwise, you are condoning inferior performance and suggesting that certain groups are incapable of competing on a level field. That is insulting and racist.
Good article. Nothing in his system prevents good students from learning and improving.
