This woke garbage and equity crap needs to stop.
It's not going to stop any time soon. No one is speaking out against it.

So....international students are applying to college in other countries.
Even American students are applying to college in other countries.
Germany is enjoying increased applications from students all over the world.

German colleges are NOT woke.

So students that cannot be on time, cannot finish/turn in their classwork, don't study, don't pass can enjoy a well rounded college education where they get a "free pass" for basically showing up.

When our school district adopted some of these policies, I wasn't sure about it.

And now, in retrospect, I see the value.

The goal of the education system is to educate. Not grade. So, when a kid did terribly on a major test they could retake the test for a possible grade of 70. The end result of this second chance was, the kids were actually learning the stuff and not giving up once they got a 45. They weren't making A's, but they were passing, and learning the content.

Redoing work for a better grade is learning.

Well, we've got forces at work in that direction. There are MANY initiatives to get kids into robotics and other STEM jobs. In particular, introducing girls to those curriculums because girls have by and large not chosen careers in STEM.

Let the dumb kids be segregated with their own kind and smart kids with their own kind. Why hold back the smart kids?

Stop worrying about people's feelings.

They just want an easy way to push them out the door illiterate and unprepared while sadly hiding behind race as a shield for such abuse.
Nothing in the original article indicated that the teacher in question was passing students who did not deserve it. He is giving passing students a grade and failing students a different grade.
And those who need coaching or extra time are getting it:
Quote:
Los Angeles and San Diego Unified — the state’s two largest school districts, with some 660,000 students combined — have recently directed teachers to base academic grades on whether students have learned what was expected of them during a course — and not penalize them for behavior, work habits and missed deadlines. The policies encourage teachers to give students opportunities to revise essays or retake tests to show that they have met learning goals, rather than enforcing hard deadlines.
That's not the same as promoting illiterate students.

I'm not worrying about people's feelings.

And there are "level" classes. You can take AP and Pre-AP if you want a higher grade scale and more challenging course work.

I'm acknowledging that we need people to be educated at least to a bare minimum, and we can't have a large number of high school drop outs and succeed economically.

And if that means giving them a second chance to learn the material and then get tested over it again, for a less than stellar grade but still a passing one, that works.

Nothing like taking a system that already turns out dullards to a great extent and dumbing it down even further. Maybe we could just crank out grunting apes that would consider two plus two a profound mystery of the universe.

L.A. Times :

Nearly 130 colleges and universities in California do not require students applying for the fall 2022 semester to release their ACT or SAT scores, according to updated data from the National Center for Fair & Open Testing.
Fast forward and those schools are going to get a bad rep and people aren't going to want to hire from them at least not for anything meaningful.

One of the attractions of soft grading is that they can push you to pass students that otherwise shouldn't.

Read between the lines, how this is being sold and how it's actually going to be used are not the same thing and I provided a link to how other schools have used a variety of schemes and pressuring teachers to boost graduation rates.

Do you not understand how big city politics works? Have you not seen all the places that various equity initiatives and programs have just been smoke screens for graduating kids no matter what for political PR?

The change actually started in the 1990's. Those that grew up with Barney the Dinosaur are now adults. Their mindset is different. They want school to be like a video game. If you fail, just try again.

You do have infinite number of "lives" when you are learning on your own. That's always been the case. But in the real world, you really only get one chance.

If you mess up a job interview, you can't ask the employer for a do-over.
