I didn't mention anything about the Russian economy. Obviously a nation's economy is extremely important in fighting a war, especially a full blown, drawn out war like WWII.
OTOH, I won't get into a discussion about the difference between North Vietnam's economy and the US economy during the Vietnam War.
It works with the French Foreign Legion, doesn't it?
No, that's not how the French Foreign Legion works.
No, that's not how the French Foreign Legion works.
I don't want to hijack the original topic, buht the French Foreign Legion historically accepted men with criminal records. In more recent times, they do a background check.

If we were discussing this 100 years ago, the answer would be straightforward: yes. Anybody looking to escape their past, whether due to major or minor criminality, could sign themselves up to the Legion and disappear into its ranks.
However, today, that is not quite the way things work.
Whereas the French Foreign Legion will turn a blind eye to minor criminal records, it will not permit recruits into its ranks who have serious records or who are wanted by Interpol.

Historically, the French Foreign Legion accepted men without checking their records.
That is not the same thing as having a specific accession program deliberately drafting men that have criminal records.
And there is a reason the Legion now does a background check.
Drafting young kids these days? Just wow! Typical reply from any 18 year old that I know would be "can't I just download the Call of Duty - Ukraine instead and just play virtually online?"
No, that's not how the French Foreign Legion works.

I didn't mention a military draft and the French Foreign Legion in the same post. To join the Legion you must travel to mainland France and walk into one of the Foreign Legion recruiting centers.
I definitely don't see a draft in this country's future. I think the US proved it could fight two simultaneous, conventional wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) with an all volunteer force.

This is the original comment of the tangent you were responding to:
