In general, nukes are not used for civil population. They are used for heavily fortified military objects and for heavily fortified command centers. Missile silos.
There are five nuclear strike targets in the USA. One of them is the Cheyenne mountains center. Unfortunately, one of them is north of where we are, in WA state. There's a national command center up there.
Hypersonic missiles are not for buildings etc. They are deep bunker busters. Places, where those in power hope to hide and survive. Primarily.
Of course, there was operation Gomorrah, when devastation, similar to nuke one, was done on civil population... so who knows.

The nukes that both Russia and America yield are a helluva lot more powerful than the two used on Japan. And a good many of their missiles carry 10 warheads each. Their subs and planes can also deliver nukes as do ours.
Ummmm, ICBMs on both sides are not restricted by range. They can hit anywhere they are guided on earth.
If one side hits the button the other will, and probably several other nations as well. Thousands of ICBMs, bombers armed with nukes, subs with nukes. What would be left wouldn't be worth living the short life you'd have. Best pray that you are incinerated right up front if that happens.
If I remember correctly I read that the Satan 2 missile could carry nukes that are 400x more powerful than those dropped on Japan. So I’m guessing the deaths would be 10 million+ if they struck just one big city in Cali.
The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagosaki were around 20-25 kilotons. What we and the Russians have now are in the megatons. Just one large nuke would be catastrophic. Hitting the LA area or New York would probably be as bad as you say.
