the orcs are making their push to recapture Kharkiv..

Quote:
Russia has begun its assault on Kharkiv, in case you weren't aware. The border and Kharkiv are just an hour's drive apart—only an hour separates a 50,000-strong army from the city of Kharkiv. There are several towns and villages in between. Starting at four in the morning, the occupiers began a massive assault and heavy shelling. The villages of Strelecha and Pylna have been captured. The battle continues.

Correct. Ukrainian sources report 50,000 Russian troops starting the first phase. 150,000 Russian troops on standby in the Belgorod and Kursk areas to be used when needed. Kharkiv may be evacuated before the Russians burst into there.

As for the the Russian Trade Delegation in London it was established on 24 February 1920, and was the first Russian trade representation abroad, and it began the history of trade representations of Russia in foreign countries.

The Russian facilities at Highgate included include the Defence Attaché's Office at 44 Millfield Lane, Highgate whicg would have been the office of the now expelled Russian defence attache’s offices and backed on to the Russian Trade Offices at 33 Highgate West Hill, Highgate. The offices are situated among the most expensive real estate in the UK, and the land is worth tens of millions of pounds/dollars.

Both these sites survived all the political fall out and events of the Cold War and stretch back over 100 years in terms of Russian trade and defence section and nearly 80 years in relation to Seacox Heath, and both are far older than most US diplomatic facilities including such facilities as Winfield House which became US the ambassador's residence in London in 1955.

Whilst as already mentioned it is the first time that Britain has ejected a Russian defence attache since the end of the cold war.

The main building and Consular section is located at 5 and 6-7 Kensington Palace Gardens at the junction with Bayswater Road and the Ambassador's Residence is located in a separate building at 13 Kensington Palace Gardens (Harrington House) are however still operational and still have diplomatic status, but the loss of the site at Highgate and Seacox Heath will be a significant diplomatic blow to Russia, and is unprecedented in the history of the Soviet Union never mind Russia.
I understand that.

I was just commenting on the spying stuff - everybody does it. All the time.

Western sources have detected a large gathering of Russian paratroopers in Crimea. Fears that this force may be used to capture Odessa. Information on Warnews247 (cannot include link because this is a Greek site. I have translation software but others may not).

I'll take 'Very bad ideas' for a thousand, Alex.

A bridge too far.

Russia seems likely to win doing what it does best, throw more bodies at an objective until you reach the objective. Now that their army does not look like a Benny Hill Show rerun, it seems to be working. They know what everyone else knows. Just keep up the hammering. Eventually, the west will get tired of it and go away.

I disagree. The Ukrainian military has been so weakened that the Russians can now go on the offensive and expect serious results, committing thousands of troops that had been held back. Yes, they will continue to hammer on the other areas of the front until everything collapses. The paratroopers in Crimea may just be a feint to have Ukraine hold more forces in Odessa.

The Ukrainians are the ones who look like a Benny Hill comedy show since they lack the ability to throw the Russians out of their country with all the wealth and weapons that the West has provided, as well as failing last summer's offensive.

I doubt that the West will ever get tired of this. Even if Russia takes all of Ukraine, the West will still plan to throw some spikes into Russia's wheels for a long time.

So far, the only cities Russia has managed to hold have been destroyed completely. If cities actually exist, the Orcs cannot hold them.
They fought for months to capture a city of 35,000.

Odesa?... Population about 1 million. Whole buncha Orcs are going to die there. You're right, though. Russia won't get tired of it.
What may happen is, the chronic fuel and supply shortage Ukraine is creating for the Russians may make it impossible for Russia to continue.

It hasn't really been just the spying or political interference that's been the issue in terms of Britain, it's the fact that the Russian GRU has been responsible for numerous high profile poisonings cases and murders on British soil in the past few decades, and there latest involvement in terms of organising arson attacks against Ukrainian businesses in the UK has been the final straw.

Britain finally just had enough, so there will now be a lot less Russian diplomats in Britain and a lot less British diplomats in Russia, which is fine with most British people as we are sick and tired of the GRU and their activities.

Furthermore we no longer do much trade with Russia due to economic sanctions, so they no longer require the facilities that have had their diplomatic status withdrawn and as far as most people in Britain are concerned the next step should be the closure of Consular section is located at 5 and 6-7 Kensington Palace Gardens at and the Ambassador's Residence at 13 Kensington Palace Gardens (Harrington House) along with the closure of British diplomatic facilities in Russia.

The same is increasingly true of the Chinese and their hacking, and further repercussions are also being considered in relation to the Chine who were recently involved in yet more hacking of UK Government departments, and who have already had Chinese technology withdrawn from 5G Contracts, whilst it's now unlikely that the planned vast new Chinese Embassy as Royal Mint Court in London will be going ahead.

Appears that the scouting phase of Russia offense
started.
2 groups entered Kharkov region.
General progress is 20km wide and up to 5km deep.
Offensive itself is expected to develop tomorrow, unless this was just a decoy.

Understanding the crude oil/refined products situation:
  • Oil wells cannot be shut down and restarted without great effort and even time. So they are kept running.
  • Some oil is exported and some is sent to refineries for conversion to other products - gasoline, diesel and so forth.
  • Ukraine has degraded Russian refined products by about 15%. That's enough to cause Russia to ban exports. They now need everything they can refine.
  • That means the amount of exported oil has increased, decreasing the price. A month ago the price of oil was $86; today it's $78. Russia must accept less than that, but no one really knows how much less.
It was widely reported that the US, out of fear of rising oil prices, asked Ukraine not to bomb refineries. It has turned out that (as usual) policy makers and bureaucrats got it all wrong. Bombing refineries is exactly the thing that will hurt Russia the most while creating a benefit for the rest of the world.

The down side is, "The West" will probably be blamed for gas and diesel shortage in Russia.
