What does ‘first-generation’ have to do with the guy’s lack of success/ignorance?

To take it a step further, it’s not just a matter of what they want to do. Since the field is highly-competitive, a realistic consideration of one’s capabilities (and likelihood of success) is necessary as well. When one believes money is easy or pursues a degree (or not) based on what others say, it’s immediately clear they lack what a law student needs i.e. logical reasoning and critical thinking skills. That said, this is precisely the type who will attend a lower-tiered or non-accredited law school, then wonder why they’re sitting on the sidelines.

In other words, a J.D. in and of itself may be useless; where it’s from (and what one does with it) is what makes the difference relative to success and/or earnings.

It's all a bunch of BS.

Nobody is forcing anybody to take out a loan. There are types of lawyers that can easily pay off that loan, and there are types of lawyers who cant. He should have know the difference and become the type of lawyer that can. Or, he should have not taken out the loan in the first place.

An 18 year old can live on his/her own.
An 18 year old can decide to join the military and go to war.
An 18 year old can sign his/her own consent for a medical procedure.
An 18 year old can decide to change their gender.

But an 18 year old can't decide whether or not to take out a loan?

What a bunch of crap.

I don't totally agree. You walk by any student union these days and you have a bunch of booths trying to push credit cards to 18 year old with no financial education or restraint.

Sure, ultimately the responsibility falls on the "consumer" but that doesn't mean it's not predatory. It's taking advantage of some naive, inexperienced person. Not much different than the sleezy car salesman that's selling the $1500 underbody protection package to unsuspecting grandma.
