What a relief! The WHO is considering cancelling the global pandemic alert because the virus is everywhere and everyone knows about it; herd immunity theory? The WHO needs a mechanism in case, in the near future, there is a new global pandemic where the WHO needs to issue a new alert? The current pandemic is old news?
“This is a formal definition,” Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious diseases specialist at University Health Network, said of the designation. “It’s a very technical term that’s used for an international health emergency … that has the potential for global impact where you need more global co-ordination and communication.”
Bogoch said the designation will eventually be lifted, but when it is, it doesn’t mean COVID will disappear."

It implies that the situation is “serious, sudden, unusual, or unexpected” and may require immediate international action.”
But America is now stuck with "mask culture". The struggle continues...
The mask culture is pretty much dying everywhere except here in NY. And even here in NY, the number of mask wearers are fewer and far between. But can you blame some of us? The density here in NYC is very high.

I don't blame people. Everyone has their reasons, and some are legit. Like older folks, or people with weakened immune systems.
Unfortunately, many criminals have been wearing masks for the sole purpose of hiding their identities while committing their crimes. They often walk into a store with a mask on, pretending to be a customer. Next thing you know, they pull out a gun and demand the cash. That's not going away anytime soon. Before Covid, if someone came right in wearing a big ol mask covering their face, employees would at least be mindful. Since Covid, many let their guard down and fell victim to these criminals as a result.
It is amazing being in Asia right now. Mask culture is incredibly strong.
Prior to Covid, it was normal for anyone who was sick to wear a mask for a few days until they felt better. Nowadays, just about everyone wears a mask out in public every single time, even though it is not mandatory to do so.
I’ve asked a bunch of people about it. My question goes like this: “When will you stop wearing the mask?”
Every single response is either silence or “I don’t know”.
They are truly brainwashed out here. This mask thing is really odd to me, because many aspects of Asian life are superior to the west. I have to say, wearing a mask is not only senseless, but I also don’t believe it’s good for your immune system.

mask culture in Japan originally started out of courtesy but then became part of “cute culture”. this was explained to me before covid by a Japanese national.

No way is it a coast thing. I'm in South Carolina and aside from one or two very elderly people, have not seen anyone wearing a mask for months. Sounds more like a control issue in Seattle and NYC from the politicians.
