since the early days? you must mean after 1976. since before then it was completely legal for law abiding citizens living in washington dc to own pistols, rifles and shotguns.
If you are going to try to be cleaver, try not to be so ignorant. Washington DC didn't exist in 1776. It was established in 1790.
I love the choice of butter knife! (That and the "agonizing liberal ranting" are my favorites.) Too funny, though in a pinch, I suppose you use what you have.
My choices? Pepper spray, locked doors and windows, and my husband...who has the "big stuff". I received a pistol as a birthday present (yeah, romantic huh? ) But I want to take more lessons and pass the California handgun test (whatever its called) before I actually take possession.
I used to be against guns for my own home, but things have made me realize you need to be prepared to protect yourself at least until the "authorities" can take over. Plus, my husband is very safety oriented. His father, who was in the military, taught all his children how to shoot and the extreme importance of being a safe and responsible gun owner.
I have to shake my head at my wifes gun. I got her the same as mine, but she felt the need to "personalize" it. I feel sorry for the fool who gets shot with pink flowered handle grips.

OMG, you have to take a test in California for a handgun?!

I hear you have to take one to drive as well. Tests are also required to practice law, practice medicine, gain a skill certification, gain acceptance to college, etc.
The NRA never shuts up about gun safety and the like. Is asking someone to take a test before owning a lethal instrument really so bad? With rights come responsibilities.
I also defended myself with it during a Moose attack while hiking in Utah once.
