I would just bet that some of those neighbors you are so confident of -have a firearm in their home at this very moment - maybe even someone on your own street

If you don't know how to use a gun, then fine, don't own one. But don't assume that all others are as incompetent with a firearm as you and therefore shouldn't have one in the house. Your vote to ban guns affects the disabled, elderly and women who are stalked (2/3's falls here I guess). Imagine a wheelchair bound person fighting off strong men, or an elderly couple. What are they going to defend themselves with? A phone? Good luck with that, as cops are usually good at cleaning up scenes and not preventing crime.

In no particular order.. I live out of town, two GSD personal protection dogs(now pets),a rescued ex racing Greyhound who controls the other two dogs and is more dangerous than both of them put together, steel internal doors and wall inserts(which are not externaly visible. A proffesionaly designed and constructed safe room (already here when I moved in). A overt CCTV system and a covert CCTV system with full night vision.
Remote power controls for all utilities.
Hidden gun safes at strategic points.
Weapons... 4 combat shotguns, 4 bullpup assault rifles (modderated) all with sufficent ammunition. All fitted with IR laser target systems and night vision. Body armour and balistic protecton hidden at multiple strategic locations. Gas masks and life support plus first aid equipment.
I have no hand guns or edged weapons. So I sort of conform to CA law!!!

Actually while in the service I regularly qualified as either expert or sharpshooter on the .45 automatic. I also know that 90% of the civilians who think they are "proficient" with a weapon will screw it up as soon as the adrenalin starts to flow. That's what the professionals know -- it take a lot more training than Joe Six Pack gets to be able to effectively use a firearm in a stress situation.

And about the spouses and girlfriend assaulted with weapon kept in the home?

I would recommend at LEAST a last will and testament. If you're assets are significant, you may think about a revocable trust.

My spouse has her own Glock. She is quite good with it too.

How about your spouse?

I was with you until you threw in the old domestic violence part. That violence will occur regardless of what weapon is used.
I agree however that too many folks buy a hand gun shoot a few rounds and pronounce themselves the master of the weapon.
