I hever never shot anyone, but have felt much safer having one in my safe, at home, the time helicopters circled my house chasing a carjacker (who tried to break in) and the times I have crossed the desert at night, with two small children sleeping in the car. My dad was an FBI agent, my husband is a Marine Officer. I would not hesitate to defend myself.
I have likely scenarios planned in my head, just in case, and am betting on me. I understand gun laws, and make the transport as legal as possible, and am aware of the laws I am breaking, when I choose to break them, and understand the penalty.
I know you asked another this question but, you asked a fair question.
I have shot and killed an intruder in my home - and watched him die. It is not an experience I would like to go through again -
Neither would I, even though, I relive, and yes, dream about combat operations 40 plus years ago. I believe that such trauma "hard wires" the brain to never forget the horror of taking another person's life. I know that my Viet-Nam brothers all feel the same way, as do the military from wars past and present.
I have a question for you...
Would you do it again?
Same question goes to steve.
If called upon to do so, yes without hesitation. Duty is not immutable, but duty preserves personal freedoms and liberties that all US citizens enjoy today, and hopefully, far into the future.
We live in rural Oklahoma. Last time someone called the sheriff (three years ago), it took 45 minutes.
Am I supposed to be like the Brinks commercials and hide in a closet, on the phone with the $5/hour call center representative while my home is burglarized and my children brutalized?
<oh stop nodding your head, you fruit cake! It's a rhetorical question!>
I'll call the police, but I'll suggest they go ahead and roll the meat wagon as well!
