Hmmm... use the crowbar, Gordon Freeman style? My numchucks are at home right now because I have this girl's equipment in my locker and I can't fit them in there anymore. She should probably come get it.

Defending in the house I reach first for my .38 snub. Loaded with alternating shot rounds and hollow points. Whatever your choice of weapon it's the will to use it that matters more than the type. If you have chosen to take your defense and that of your loved ones as a personal thing then you have the obligation to train and mentally condition yourself to do what must be done without hesitation or reservation and to understand the ramifications of using lethal force. It's not as easy as just sticking a weapon in reach.

A shotgun with bird shot at close quarters, or a .45-caliber pistol.

I can't see standing there and let them take everything they want. How about if the criminal is trying to kill or rape a family member? Do you think barfing will scare the criminal away?

This just got revived, so I'll add my two cents worth.

Weapon of choice is to be a good neighbor. Fewer people likely to attack me, and more people likely to come to my aid.

Second best weapon of choice---a good sense of who to trust.

As for fear. I never lock my door when I go to bed at night, I rarely lock it when I go out durng the day. The key to my car is in the cupholder. If I thought I had to lock up my stuff, I'd find a new neighborhood.

Dogs, big ones for first line of defense.

Rifle for second line of defense.

Knife, razorblade, baseball bat or sledge hammer for last line of defense.

Lotsa crime victims have that attitude.
Let me ask you this.

If you expect a neighbor to come to your aid, you must be ready to come to theirs.
Since you are really not able to really come to your neighbors aid, how or why should you expect them to come to yours?

One armed man can cause unstoppable havoc among an unarmed group of people. That should be obvious. Whats not obvious is why so many people would let that happen to themselves.

Depending on others to save your hide is risky business & usually does not work well at all.

Did I miss it or did you state the type of art or technique you use in your defense? I would be interested to know as I have met masters of several arts, and I can tell you, none of them are as "confident" as you when dealing with an armed attacker unless they are within melee distance of them.
