Thanks. I want to thank you for teaching me such a "skill" with your...enlightened (giggle) posts.
Simper, not giggle.

Having a problem with Israel is not the same as having a problem with Jews, despite what liberal RINOs and wicked snake charmers might want people to believe. Small minds would think otherwise.
Oh, how hackneyed. We see. It's just the foreign Jews you hate. Well, that's safe. Gotta watch those snake charmers. Especially if you're a reptile.

I may be the prince of meaningless blather, but it would be an honor to crown you the supreme ruler any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Just because you can't follow the allusions doesn't put the ball in my court.
Not cushy, just rational. The kind of simple decision any thinking person would make.

Oh, they have. Why, some of your ancestors may have made the same decision.
When you have little to lose...
I figure the Iranian was well fed, clothed and sheltered and didn't want to rock the boat if he was ordered. Reminds me of the well fed, ignorant and lazy Americans (it's kind of sickening to call many of these people Americans actually) who willingly give up more and more economic freedoms to the Treasury and Federal Reserve and to an alarmingly centralized and powerful federal government made up of neo-bolshevists who pose as Republicans. At least Democrats, for their faults, don't hide their socialist ambitions.
Actually my great-uncle served as deputy tresurer of a former communist country and was a staunch capitalist (ergo, seditious in the eyes of the current government). He changed things from the inside which is arguably braver than trying to get out of dodge. My father left in '56 across the Austrian border having to swim across that lake that divides the two countries. Of course, his conditions likely paled in comparison to said Iranian. Point is that its rare for people to defect unless conditions for them personally are bad enough.

But those who do have nards. I salute your father.

Uh, I wouldn't care if Israel had Jews, camel jockeys, Chinese, or even Germans . They're still a wicked and perverse socialist state subsidized by the US. I think it's more of a convenience argument for, you guessed it, simple minds to associate Israel hatred with Jew hatred just because Israel doesn't allow anyone but Jewish people to live there.
Regretably, the snake charmers use their devilish tongue to charm gullible humans as well.

People in straightjackets are intellectually clever as well in ways I'll never understand. In addition, I never watched Dr. Strangelove.

Meh. You do what you have to do, WHEN you have to do it. And not a moment before. It's not heroic to anyone except those in cushy spots.
Think about it this way...would you be ready to shoot American citizens, police, and even military if/when the time comes to defend the Constitution (as per your oath as an American) against domestic enemies? Oh yes, I'm serious. You just can't see the possibility, but things can change pretty dern quickly.

Not meaning to diminish in any way the courage of your father and his fellow Hungarians (I assume that is accurate?), but the constitutional guarantees in place here since this country's founding (particularly the Second Amendment) make such a scenario much less likely here than it was in Budapest.
I would stress, also, that my life has not always been so "cushy." I have indeed taken up arms for my country and killed in her defense -- though not, of course, domestically.

Yep. Murdering AVH police without mercy was revenged quite nicely by the Reds.
I expect zero praise for what he did. He only left because his civil rights were trampled on. The athlete in question is likely in much better shape, so if following orders he has little to complain about and most outsiders have little room to judge them from afar. We as Americans have given up many rights in the past couple of decades so that we can remain fat and ignorant.
With all due respect for veterans, its one thing to fight a known enemy who looks different or has a different uniform, but when the enemy is a domestic police force it's quite another.
