TORONTO - A U.S. Army specialist who fled Fort Bragg for Canada after learning his unit was to be deployed to Iraq was ordered deported Wednesday.
Jeremy Hinzman, 29, is likely to be court-martialed when he returns to the United States and could face up to five years in prison. Hinzman said Canada's Border Services Agency ordered him to leave the country by Sept. 23 and he would be handed over to U.S. authorities.

Right on. Court martial him, fine him, throw him in the brig at hard labor, then deport him to wherever he wants to go with a one-way ticket. He signed a contract, he broke the contract, he deserves not a damned thing but the punishment that goes along with the contract.

I agree. He signed up, so he should honor his contract. If he is so opposed to war and/or shooting another person (the reasons he gave in the article), why the heck would he join the military in the first place? Doesn't make sense, and it's a lousy excuse for his dishonorable and cowardly behavior. I think the military and the US government should throw the book at him. What a jerk.

he signed up, was not drafted. I do not feel bad for him.

Does your value system have any qualms about willingly breaking a contract or going back on an oath?

He was not forced to go into the military like so many other countries do, he volunteered. He DID NOT have the "right to flee". He signed a legal and binding contract to serve so many years in the military and he broke that contract. There is a penalty for that and in time of war it can be a steep one.
After he has serves his time and receives his dishonorable discharge he can go freeload off some other government.
