Michael Moore is proof-positive that anyone can make a compelling argument when they only show one side of the story. Objective journalism? Not so much.

Sicko is an excellent movie. Reading some of the responses here reaffirms my belief that too many Americans are idiotic conformists who are trained like sheep to believe in all the BS these companies feed them on a daily basis. "Oh no, nothing is wrong with the system" "We have a great system", "Michael Moore must be a Communist!" "We have the best system in the world!". "Lipitor saved my life, thank you Pfizer!". What a nation of idiots we have become!

The thing that I loved about Sicko is that it showed how the doctors in England, France, Cuba, Canada LOVE their jobs because they are allowed to do what they've been trained to do. Our doctors have to fight with insurance company bureaucrats in order to do their jobs. The Republicans would have you think that people are dropping like flies, laying in the hospital hallways drooling on themselves with doctors having a smoke in countries with nationalized healthcare. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that he didn't focus on the fact that the doctors don't come out of med school saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt before they even see their first patient because not only do these countries believe that healthcare is a right, so is a free or heavily subsidized education. If we are going to reform how healthcare is administered, we also need to adress the education of our future physicians.

I saw Sicko when it came out two years ago and I had tears in my eyes by the end. I'm not sure if I'm for single payer per se, but I totally agree that the system needs a major overhaul. And anyone who doesn't think so isn't living in reality.

That's a really good point. I hadn't thought of that. In addition we should work on recruiting people to teach the doctors/nurses/pharmacists. There's a shortage for nursing and pharmacy teachers, hence the long waiting lists.

That would be the one. Took a bunch of insurance-less 9-11 rescue workers down there and they were treated and sent home with free meds and treatment plans.

Why won't ANY of you talk honestly about...

- The problem of morbid obesity in America, and the hundreds of billions of dollars it costs Americans yearly. In 1997, NHIS found that there were over $78 billion in medical costs that were directly attributable to obesity. That figure is not estimated to be at least $150 billion per year, and account for nearly 10% of all medical costs!

- Medical malpractice, and the need to cap pain & suffering and punitive awards. These too cost Americans hundreds of billions of dollars per year.

- Hypochondriacs who virtually live in doctors' clinics and hospitals, though there is virtually nothing wrong with them. How many hundreds of millions of dollars does THIS cost Americans every year?

- The FACT that there are NOT 50 million Americans without health care. That is an absolute lie.

Come on folks, you need to bring more than complaints and demonization to the table!

That is a great point...This country has become reactive when we should be proactive due to insurance companies. Doctors need to be compensated for prevenative medicine...which they currently are not. But,,,under this new plan they would be. There would be incentives for them to work on programs to keep people healthy...Instead of people who are not covered by insurance,,,waiting until they collapse from a totally preventable condition to finally make it to an ER... A $50.00 health problem turns into a $50,000 problem under this current system.

Everybody deserves a chance to be healthy.

Rush Limbaugh said that we have the best health care system in the world and no change or overhaul is needed. Now, I am confused!

I think we have the best doctors in the world, just the worst administrative system.
