The confederate flag represents several things. For most it is simply a bit of regional pride in the south, and a way for people to honor the history of dixie. It is for many a political symbol of defiance against overbearing federal goverment. The confederacy was a stand against federal domination of the states, an issue that is very relevant today. In an era when goverment takes over whole industries (banking, auto), it is not suprising this flag would be used to show displeasure with goverment tyranny. Many conservatives use the confederate flag, or the Gadasen (dont tread on me) as a visually display of their displeasure with the goverment. I fly the third national confederate off my front porch as a symbol of my conservative values and my belief that the goverment has oversteped the constitution. I also love the south and its history (even though I currently live in Mi).

However seeing alot of hate towards both I just get stuck in mental ruts in what to think of it. And sometimes have trying periods that try to make sense of it all. Heck just a quick search on the web you can find the most vile and hateful things about the south and everything related.

I've never really been to the south before (unless you count East Texas) but I would really like to see it one day. But I have met countless people from there and I thought they were spectacular.
Stay as far away from anything connected to the confederacy because the average American will view you as dumb and racist. That's just the truth.

I have no issues with the confederate flag. It is a symbol of regional pride of part of America. I live in the north and have friends who put it on as their front license plate or hang it in the front window of their home or on a wall in their garage. Freedom of speech!

Slavery no longer exists in the U.S., so it's foolish to equate pride in the South with pride in slavery. First and foremost, most whites did not own slaves and lived in quite poor and working class conditions. The destruction of the Confederacy was the destruction of a proud regional culture. The average Southerner was no more a Colonel Sanders type sipping mint juleps than the average Northerner was a fatcat industrialist J.P. Morgan or Rockefeller type. It's amazing that such ignorance still exists.

Those who argue against the use of the Confederate flag claim it condones slavery, but what does this even mean? History is history. Following that logic, traveling to Egypt and viewing the pyramids celebrates slavery, as the majority of ancient Egyptian structures were built on the backs of Jews and other captive slaves. It's inane. If the Confederate flag symbolizes slavery than the U.S./Union flag symbolizes the genocide of Amerindians, rampant sexism, and industrial tyranny.

If people wanted to be racist, why would they fly the Confederate flag? Wouldn't it make more sense to just wear a Klan costume if they wanted to be racist?

As I'm sure you know, the swastika was originally an East Asian symbol used in Hinduism and Buddhism. It was chosen by some in the National Socialist Party as a means of symbolizing Germanic heritage, as it was thought that the original Aryans came from the Indian subcontinent and migrated to Northern Europe and Scandinavia, laying the foundation for European civilization.

As for the use of the swastika by Neo-Nazi organizations, what do you care? They aren't flying it over the White House, and flying the flag of the Third Reich is no more going to bring Adolf Hitler back than flying the Confederate flag is going to bring Robert E. Lee or Jefferson Davis back. No matter what your political ideology and philosophy, we're chasing our tails debating the ghosts of history.

As opposed to the Union flag, which oversaw the deportation and ethnic cleansing of Amerindians, Sherman's massacre and destruction of innocent American civilians, countless foreign wars, etc. Quite a symbol of peace.

Well if that's the case let's ban all the state flags. While we're at it lets ban all the city flags and oh yea let's ban the international flags.

The Confederate flag isn't even an official flag it's someone's personal interest flag....so let's ban rainbow flags as well since they fall under the same category.
