The Towerlight - Adjunct faculty member fired following racial slur (http://www.thetowerlight.com/adjunct-faculty-member-fired-following-racial-slur-1.2174910 - broken link)

It's not difficult to understand why blacks will use this word-as a form of mockery and to take power away from it. To claim otherwise is simply being disingenuous.

There are lots of words I wouldn't shout from a street corner. But that doesn't mean I don't say them.

both black and white people should use it all the time, in order to create total hate, fear, and all out war among blacks and whites

maybe then, when white and black people realize they need each other to co-exist, will then everyone stop taking each other for granted, stop race baiting, and finally get along...it will take a severe period of new segregation in order for this to happen

They should use it all the time to take the power away from it and render it meaningless. But people don't want that...they want it to be like Voldamort...he who must not be named!!!! OOOHHH scary word.

Really, people like that kind of ****.

This country also has an equally amount of ignorant people who think that it is fine to demean one another b/c "we can call each other that". What I'm saying is that the word will never disappear from this country as long as these two groups are present.

Now that being said, understand this there are some words that are used strictly to make a point and is not used to demean anyone. This is one of those cases. It just seems to me that the overly sensitive and people with limited understanding of the english language and it's usage are offended (in this case).

The indivdual who reported this man, who incidentally lost his job over this should have asked for an explaination if he/she was so offended or an apology if the explaination did not do, and not run to the dean and whine about it.
Quoted for truth but not all of us are confrontational. The student may have been afraid of retaliation in the form of a bad grade if he/she confronted the professor. Would I have played it differently? Probably but I'm not afraid of confrontation. I do have co-workers (most of them) who are, though and, considering what has gone on in my place of work in the past (can't give details; the internet is not as private as most people think it is) I don't blame them.

In the end, I guess that we don't really know all the details but I'll leave you with this: The fact that his statement is open to interpretation means it has the potential to cause this type of backlash. Yes, everyone has the right to free speech but that doesn't mean that there won't be consequences.

So even though many don't like it, that word isn't yours to ban anymore..
You're an adult, aren't you? Set an example for the younger generation by having respect for others & realizing the impact certain words can make. Otherwise, you're no better than those young clueless kids.

Yes I'm an adult. I didn't say that I use the word, but I don't approve of anyone trying to permenantly ban a noise that comes out of your mouth. That's rediculous. Certain words have an impact to you and I perhaps, but maybe not to these younger kids. The future is theirs and if they choose to stop fearing a word then more power to them. Especially if they take something ugly and make it something nice. It's not MY place to ensure that the future have the same hang ups we do. If people want to change the meaning of words them more power to them. I swear, some people just want their issues to go on and on in perpetuity.

I'm reminded of the South Park episode where the kids actually got Websters dictionary to change the meaning of the word "f.a.g.", which has changed many times over the course of history. That's how life goes.

This board won,t even allow you to use the word ******. Instead you have to use the "n" word. But most of the monikers labeling white people are not censored.
