I think it would be better if the unemployed had to work for their unemployment checks. I don't think it will help anyone to remain unemployed for 2 years. They will likely add a Tier 5 to unemployment so now we will have folks who are unemployed for more than two years. I don't think a two-three year gap will help anyone.

At least if folks had to work for their unemployment checks, even if it was just part-time, then they wouldn't have to worry about a gap.

I heard a story about a program like this in Indiana, on NPR. I'll try to find it later.

I agree. It should be treated like a real job where they could lose their unemploment pay, i.e., job, if they didn't do their part to earn it.
Maybe give them a "demotion" with lesser pay / benefits if they are deadbeats.

If they had to work for their unemployment checks I bet they'd be motivated to find better paying jobs sooner and get off the government payroll.

This touches on the problem that the long-tern unemployed have. They loos their job skills and work habits. (I am part of they) Also the long term unemployed need more money. So what I was thinking was that you could have a program that took over when the normal unemployment insurance ran out that paid people to do community service. The participants would go to a temp agency get signed up and turn in community serves hrs. for pay. The rate of pay would be minimum wage to a maximum of 20 hrs. a week.

This I think would be better than what we have now.
That is actually something I never thought of, you have a very fertile mind.

I feel your pain, having been unemployed a few times, and once for 8 months straight, it sucked.

I'll bet that most every job around most communities already have some city worker assigned for doing it already, and you may even run into opposition from the city or state public employee unions, who would feel their job may be cut if they can hire you to do some of their jobs more cheaply.

Your idea also calls for new tax revenue stream to pay your salaries, and most places are looking to cut back.

There are entrepreneurs popping up all over, i saw a guy in a service truck with this on his rear doors "1-800-DOG-POOP".

Check it out at Pooper Scooper | Dog Poop | Pet Waste Removal

You can even click on a map to see if a franchise is needed in your area.
At first I dismissed the idea of pet waste removal, but after seeing a billboard and his truck a few more times, it started to make sense. There are lots of elderly people who either cannot pick up the waste, don't want to, or other people who are just too busy. and he seems to be keeping busy.

You may find yourself at a point in your life where you can be your own man, and maybe even hook up with other people in your area who are unemployed and combine your skills and resources.

You are already looking outside the box, maybe you need to keep expanding your possibilities.

Very true. Just like it's always easier to find a woman if you're married or in a steady relationship.

OMG -- do you really think that a Dog Poop Removal business -- and a FRANCHISE on top of that -- is a good idea in this economy???

Oh PLEEEASE! YOU must be the one who is trying to SELL this FRANCHISE...

Maybe you're a Venture Capitalist and you want to finance his franchise purchase?

I'd buy myself a pooper scooper and get some cards if I really wanted to go into this business.

Wow, good luck to you in your future permanent job search and re-entry into the workforce. I like your ideas and believe they have merit. I personally think that all people receiving UI benefits put in a minimal number of community service hours/week as well. That would take away the incentive of those who just want a free unearned check every week, and would keep people's motivation and work skills up while they continue their job search.

Community service.... is not a job it usually is not something you pay someone to do.
It's a service and usually given to those who break the law!
Like cleaning up streets etc is usally a community service.
If you can list all the costs of these functions that are done instead what would save money then paying a government employee I think 5 dollars would be fine. Of course that is below the min wage and in a country were someone wants to work below a mandated wage would never get the job. Unions and socialist would kill you.

You know you could just get a JOB like the real world. Someone is always looking to pay someone to do anything in this country.

You could live on $5 an hour? How do you do it? Even in Detroit that is a stretch. If you can do it you must be a financial whiz, and your talents are worth a whole lot more, even in this severely depressed economy.
