I just think Obama is a terrible manager and has no one on his staff good enough to help him. Surround yourself with academics and you get a lot of pithy talking points, but these folks couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag, much less a crisis the magnitude of this oil spill.

No. I think he is just incompetent.

Since the facts show that his response was NOT slow, I'll ignore the remainder of the garbage in the original post.
Which facts show what you say? His hurry to get to the Gulf? Too many side trips kept him from doing that.

He went to New Orleans to address the citizens there about Hurricane Katrina, the only portion of the state to support him. He forgot about Slidel, Waveland (which was literally wiped off of the map!).All hail the great TYRANT "OBAMA"!

He can kiss my ***** buttocks!
really? I guess North Carolina, Virginia and Florida ( huge electoral prize) aren't "Southern" either?
You know what was intentional though? Watching over 1000 dead Americans floating in the streets of New Orleans after Katrina and Louisiana voted for Bush too! I guess Bush was a "vengefull" man also!

Also good to hear he finally deployed some assistance to the gulf to help with cleanup.

I don't consider 30+ days "nearly instantaneous" as you do florida.bob for finally doing more than finger pointing on TV.
This is a press release from Obama:

"From the beginning, we have worked to deploy every tool at our disposal to respond to this crisis. Today, there are more than 20,000 people working around the clock to contain and clean up this spill. I have authorized 17,500 National Guard troops to participate in the response. More than 1,900 vessels are aiding in the containment and cleanup effort. We have convened hundreds of top scientists and engineers from around the world. This is the largest response to an environmental disaster of this kind in the history of our country."

"We have also ordered BP to pay economic injury claims, and this week, the federal government sent BP a preliminary bill for $69 million to pay back American taxpayers for some of the costs of the response so far. In addition, after an emergency safety review, we are putting in place aggressive new operating standards for offshore drilling. And I have appointed a bipartisan commission to look into the causes of this spill. If laws are inadequate, they will be changed. If oversight was lacking, it will be strengthened. And if laws were broken, those responsible will be brought to justice."

I kinda wish that the whole southern US could be obliterated off the map myself. It retards the country's progress by leaps and bounds. But I do feel for anyone who earns a livelihood in those states and for the innocent wildlife and fellow citizens who are feeling the pain

I think the other states are doing a fine job of racing to the bottom in spite of the "southern US". We don't seem to be hindering you from blowing out your budgets and a few of the southern states have refused money from Uncle Sam so that's more handouts for your states.

So, your definition of a "swift response" is a guy standing up giving a press conference or speech. Aren't you always complaining about Obama talking too much?

In reality, the federal government is a massive entity capable of deploying various personnel with expertise to handle various situations. The Coast Guard, FEMA, and various engineers were deployed immediately to do their jobs.

Just because Obama didn't stand up and tell you all about the federal government doing its job doesn't mean the response was slow. It was, as Florida_Bob pointed out, instantaneous and provided a strong support role as the business that caused the mess cleaned it up.

I guess you'd prefer the government to come running on our tax dollars everytime businesses create a big problem. I'm just a lot less of a Socialist than you are, Roy.

What is the required response time for politicians to respond to oil spills?

No;no more than bush's response to Katrina. Like FEMA and the bundled loans of the housing crisis 'people give to mcuh credit of the governamnt power to get things done. Just like the admiral in charge said when ask if the governamnt should atke opver the capping;who in governamnt has the expertise or the knowledge. No one is the answer. In Katrina the stae was responible for calling the evacuation and local meergncy officals in the planning and logistic. Theyhad a plan paid for with federal money but they left it sitting on the shelf aftre the meeting in which it was planned.Turn a disaster into a tragedy;pur and simple. Loo at the dept respnsible and the finding when they looked that they had been watching porn on examination of the hard drives. In Katrina they had to turn from governamnt civilian control to the military to get even control back in new orleans. The mil;itary is the best of governamnt IMO and when a job really needs done they are the ones to turn to.Its easy compared to teh logistics they face in war or peace globally really.I the spill most of governamnt response is really putting up barriers. They are just like BP in that they have to rely mostly on contracors which contrat6cs have to be let on. Its the same with FEMA in disasters. But in the end in both bush's and obamas case the public will stop the buck at the presidents desk.In Obamas case he should have learned from Bush's mistake in katrina and his success on 9-11 going immeicately to the scene.Lessons learned and lose it seems politcally.I even think his constant threats to BP made it seem more he was saying ;you better do something because I don't know what to do.That has lead to others think he wanted BP to fail so that he could politcally use it against big oil ;who he never has liked.People sem to have had enough of leadership by fingerpointing more and more.
