I don't understand threads like these. on the one hand, everyone is whining about "their" money going towards other people's food stamps. but guess what? MANY people on food stamps work and pay taxes too, so it's just as much as their money as it is yours

regardless, you won't see a decrease in your taxes if people on food stamps all just happened to buy cheap food or got off the program all together. if the entire program ceased to exist, the gov't would just likely dump the money into something else like the war or highways. complaining about money you never really had and will never see and how that money is used is an exercise in futility.

folks, learn to live and let live. glaring at the person paying w/ a EBT card at the grocery store isn't going to make your life any better
That is such a good point! Thanks for saying that. I don't know why people want to waste time being angry at this and this is why I posted this I didn't know there were other threads on food stamps. I'm totally new to this

There are options for cheap, healthy food. You can buy brown rice, broccoli, beans, oranges are frequently on sale, eggs, tilapia, even shimp is cheaper than lobster. I just bought a pound of bananas for $1.00. One can make cheap healthy food taste good if they have a few good recipes.

I have never been on food stamps either. I do agree that you can buy cheaper healthy food, but, that actually wasn't my point. I don't think you care what my point is actually I have a larger live and let live point

Damn.

I'm in the gourmet seafood processing business here in Alaska (we have a retail license as well) and it seems that I've been missing out an an untapped market, food stamp recipients. Now that I know that poor people are buying gourmet items in absolute droves I'm sure I can get "your" money from them, thank$

No way! They would riot (as is their wont) and destroy what's left of our cities long before that!

The $40 BILLION of our tax dollars spent on their food each year is merely the tip of the iceberg in actual funds wasted on this worthless "gimme, I'm entitled, I gots rights" crowd.

When will we ever admit that we are being held to ransom?
.
Got a great solution for ya! Soylent green! Yep, shovel those pesky poor, disabled and elderly folk into the hopper first!

When I was cashiering, I saw many food stamp customers using their food stamps to buy large amounts of snack food such as chips, soda, and candy.
People who also got a cash allotment on their EBT even used EBT to buy cigarettes. It wasn't a one time thing.

If their children are hungry, they should be buying them food that has nutrition - not filling them up with candy, gum, soda, beef jerky and chips.

The cash portion should not be available for them to withdraw as cash or to use for cigarettes -- IMO.
It should be marked (coded) in a way that it can only be used for specific necessities that are not food.

This is why I do like the WIC prorgram even though it is a major PAIN as a cashier The WIC program has only healthy food which is very refreshing from all the over processed foods that food stamps cover.
Junk food is cheaper. Compare the price of soda or Kool-Aid on an ounce to ounce basis with juice--just as one example.

As far as buying lobster on food stamps, I can't say I've seen a single store that sold lobster, except maybe canned, for a bisque. Definitely not anything fresh.

I'm very glad you are entertained but am saddened by the fact that you don't use your common sense.
Poor people don't waste their money or their food stamps on lobster, if they are truly poor?
They will not have food for the rest of the month.
If they are buying lobster, they are not really poor.
End of story but enjoy your lobster.

Yes, let us all eat noodles and canned meat so the "poor" can eat lobster.
Their lobster is why tunafish is our menu.
Yes. It's all upside down now in this country. It's the so-called "poor" who don't work who have the grand lifestyles while the working chumps scrimp and budget just to survive.

It can't go on forever this way.

Many people that are receiving foodstamps also work. It seems as if a lot of people here assume that if someone is receiving public assistance, it means they are only mooching off of the tax payers. Do some do this? Yes, but there are also many that work, but, their income is low enough that they still qualify for public assistance.

I was taught to cook before age 10. At that time I had to prepare a meal for the entire family - alone. My brothers were all taught the same things. My mom was determined we would reach adulthood with this most wonderful skill.
Why? She could not boil water when she got married. Seriously, she burned many pans dry. My dad taught her how to cook and she became one fine cook and a terrific baker.
So believe it... there are people who can't boil, bake or fry a potato to save their own life (they'd probably eat it raw!).
as a boy, my parents made sure i knew how to cook at least the basics by the time i was in junior high, and i got a grand champion baker ribbon at the county fair when i was 13; and over the years i've had girlfriends who couldn't cook toast.

it definitely seems like cooking is becoming a lost skill. which is a real shame, because there's no better way of stretching a scarce food dollar than using it to buy unprocessed raw food like beans, rice, eggs, chicken, etc.
