For me it stems from bad experiences during the only time I was riding buses on a regular basis. During the late seventies I was applying for a job as a crewmember on a cruise ship and was taking a series of buses and streetcars from the southwest corner of San Francisco to the Embarcadero every day.

The buses were old, cramped, loud, uncomfortable, and filled with the dregs of society, including threatening types, drunks, the unwashed (literally) and Schizophrenics carrying on bizarre conversations with themselves.

PDX buses may be entirely different, I just don’t know as I’ve never been on, or needed one. Other than using the MAX weekly to the airport, I commonly only use my car to commute to work as I walk and use the streetcar to get around downtown. Actually if there was a commuter bus that used the freeway from downtown to Wilsonville I would take it in a heartbeat as taking the MAX, WES and local Wilsonville bus adds 2.5 hours to my work day compared to driving.
