I just moved here from Alabama and There are alot of cultural differences. Since I come from a small town i'm unsure about how to meet people. Any ideas? I guess you can say i feel like a social outcast not knowing anyone here. lol

The portland LJ community and the portland subreddit both have occasional meetups, if you're into nerds.

If you're an Auburn fan, be careful for a while.

haha believe it or not, i'm not an Auburn fan. Before moving up here i lived right down the road so it was more frustrating being around all the fans. It is nothing more than a football school. Not something i'm exactly in to. Besides...ducks are great football players along with being well educated

Actually, Oregon’s football graduation rate is even worse than Auburn’s: 63% vs 54%. Both teams should be embarrassed:

Scout.com: The Bootleg's 2011 Graduation Rate Analysis

Oregon’s record for African American players is even worse: 41% graduate.

The graduation rates of black players for Auburn, Oregon and other bowl teams are an indication that sports has a way to go to realize Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream. - ESPN

Notre Dame graduates 96% of their players. Is that why they are no longer competing for the national championship? Maybe they care to much about the welfare of their players.

karlsch... with all due respect... was there really a need to single out African American football players? I can't see one, but I may have a bias.

Can you please give us some examples of "cultural differences"?
It's been mentioned twice in different threads and since I have never been to Alabama, it would be interesting to know what they are.

It depends on what your interests are, so it's hard to give specifics. But ... get involved in something. Volunteer somewhere. Hand out water at a race event. Volunteer at a museum, or a theater, handing out programs.

HandsOn Portland coordinates volunteer events.

Then there're the non-altruistic things to do. Join a book club. Take an adult education class in a subject you're interested in. Take any kind of a class. Community Education, through any one of the schools, offer lots of subjects. Join a theater group.

Meet Up has lots of events you can get involved in.

Portland Community College has just one of the many education programs.

Because many people think that win-at-all-cost university athletic departments are using young Black men to attain athletic glory and then are abandoning them when their four years of usefulness (eligibility) are up.

If you look at the statistics, not all athletic departments do this.

Having moved from SoCal to N. Alabama, here is my perspective, which may be different from the OP's:

- This is a BBQ, fast food, & meat-loving culture, with little emphasis on exercise or healthful eating. The few farmers' markets here are very small and disappointing (i.e., the one in Charleston, WV is WAY better ), and there aren't very many vegetarian cafes or even vegetarian options other than salad at most restaurants. I end up buying produce (shipped from CA or FL) at the grocery store or growing my own. The closest Trader Joe's is 110 miles away in Nashville. Being a vegetarian here has been quite a challenge; from what I've researched, Portland is way more vegetarian-friendly.

- College football is taken VERY seriously here. Google Harvey Updike if you don't know who he is. If you are not into Alabama or Auburn football, you will be in a very small minority of people. I don't perceive Portlanders as being rabid sports fans.

- Religion and church are very important to most people in AL. Churches advertise heavily on TV here, something I never saw in CA. I am assuming Portland is closer on the continuum to CA (where almost anything goes, and people you've just met don't ask you what church you go to) than to AL in this regard.

- Walmart is HUGE here.
