I think they should get away from using former players and move toward using journalists again. While there's no doubt that a former player's insight is valuable, I would prefer to hear from someone who is actually good at calling a game and can analyze from an outside perspective. Journalists have spent their whole career analyzing the game's finer details, players spent most of it on the field.
Best comment on the thread. This includes the game call and the in-studio analysis.
For the most part, most of them are middle of the road - one leaves, another is added - whatever, it's all the same.
The one's that stand out...
Madden, Summerall
Michaels w/ whomever
Jin Nantz
Gus Johnson - maybe not for your #1 game - but put him on a 2nd tier game with a lot of offense
(by the way, was Johnson calling the Cardinal game last week? I could have sworn that receiver that was wide open tripped on a sprinkler head...)
Michael Irvin -good content, not delivery (Deion has infected him, along w/ Eisen - Mariucci seems to have avoided the extreme silliness)
Jaworski - good content, could be better with better surroundings
Gruden - please exit
Berman - update your style - he does work well with Jackson
Absolutely, positively dont like Mike Ditka (I have said this in other threads)--he is the worst, never adds anything to the broadcast. Too me, maybe outside of Berman (whose schtick is sooooo old), no one else is even close to how bad Ditka is.
Funny, I like Ron Jaworski. I dont mind Collinsworth either. Tirico is great.
Gruden, meh.
Is it just me or does Ditka act like someone is forcing him to be on ESPN? He talks like he doesn't want to be there and looks very annoyed.
