ncitgal,

The $480 you quote is what you are paying for tour spouse's coverage correct? I work for the state as well and while I don't pay for my health insurance I would have to pay $480 a month to cover my wife. We found a more affordable BCBS plan for her on our own and she pays around $190 a month.

The state plan is ok for a single idividual, but it is not good if you have a spouse to cover. I think you can find better more affordable plans on your own.

When I worked for LA county in CA. it was Zero. At Duke I got reamed for Approx. $450 a month for my family.
It really also depends on the amount of coverage your getting and your presciption plan.

Very doubtful you could get the equivilent of the state PPO for the same price from an honest insurer like BCBS.

Yeah, the BCBS plan my wife has for $190/month is not as good as the state plan, but we really can't afford the $480 a month it would cost through the state. With a little luck our insurance situation will change in the near future.

I'm not sure why they state HR people aren't able to negotiate better rates for employee spouses. $480/month to cover your spouse is quite steep and a bit shocking.

I guess the problem the state has is that the group is so large that many of the spouses are older and have health problems. It's the same plan that retirees from state government use, right? This is how it was explained to me that my coworker was able to cover herself and her 4 children at a lower cost than I could insure myself and my husband. I agree, though--it's way expensive.

Speaking of insurance, can someone explain why the same individual BCBSNC plan is $90 more for a woman than for a man? (no maternity coverage, btw.) Is it our longer life expectancy?

I pay $193.90/month to cover myself, spouse and dependents with BCBSNC. Dental is another $50.34 a month.

Acutally, $245.00 per month for family is really good. My husband and I have had it good for a long time as far as health insurance. The company we are with right now pays full %100 for health, dental and vision....But now that we are leaving the company and moving down to AZ, we are going to have to start paying for our insurance ourselves....we have just been spoiled all this time...and now we see the other side of it. Health insurance is just to darn high today and a lot of people can't afford it. We figured we will be paying around $300.00 per month for family now, which is still good for family....but there are other places that are so much higher then that. We were quoted through our future employers between $600.00 and $900.00 per month for family. So yes, $245.00 is excellant!

I cover my family with the state plan. We have no other coverage. I just changed to the basic plan to save about $70 a month. My coverage is free (health only), but once you add a spouse and kids, forget it. I have already had the BCBS equivalent plan for my family when I worked as a contractor...that was $770 a month.

Ok, I see what you are saying...just husband and kids...we did check that out last yr. It was only about $30 a month less and $5 mil lifetime maximum. State is unlimited. My family has had enough cancer experiences to know that we need unlimited.

NC pays nothing for family benefits, only for the employee.

Someone with a spouse and 5 kids gets a deal at $480. With only a spouse, gets a hit.

Would be nice if there was a spouse only family rate.
