Decommissioning that short stretch of 440 would complicate giving instructions to someone (for example) driving from Wilmington to North Hills. "40, then 87, then 440..."
I agree. For continuity's sake, 440 should remain. NCDOT is already planning to do the same thing on either side of 840 in Greensboro (73 to the west, 785 to the east).

Well...this just got confusing. According to Tables 1 & 4 on FHWA's page, the Knightdale Bypass and a bit of I-440 is in the Interstate system as I-87, but regarding I-495, it's not listed in Table 2 but it's listed in Tables 3 & 4.

https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/na...m/routefinder/

However, according to NCDOT's route changes page, I-87 (minus Future) doesn't exist yet and they haven't sent applications to AASHTO and/or FHWA requesting I-495's decommissioning and/or permission to sign the Knightdale Bypass & part of I-440 as I-87. There also hasn't been any recent announcements from them concerning I-495 & I-87.

I have no idea what to make of this.

The US-70 Corridor Commission has posted their minutes from their March 16 meeting. Updates on projects along US-70/Future I-42 were given. While the following doesn't really affect the Triangle, an update was also given on CSX's future Carolina Connector terminal in Rocky Mount and the Commission has approved a resolution to have US-70 in Wayne, Lenoir, and Craven counties designated as an Aerospace Corridor.

People just won't give up on GTP. 25 years after it was first envisioned, it has never accomplished its objectives or come even close.

Not to mention that North State Aviation recently shut down at GTP and Winston-Salem. I think the biggest thing that caused the GTP to be doomed from the get-go was opening it in 1991 without the infrastructure already in place to support it. There was no interstate access (nor a plan to upgrade US-70 to a freeway even without a red, white, blue shield) and it didn't even get a direct rail spur leading from the railroad going to Morehead City until 2012 and it still has no rail connection to the Port of Virginia in Norfolk or even the Port of Wilmington. Morehead City is a fishing dock compared to those two ports.

All the state cared about then was the runway. They didn't think about freight movement on the ground and that's mainly what turned many companies away. GTP might've been more successful otherwise, IMO.

Although US-70 will become I-42 eventually and there are plans to connect the GTP to Norfolk, I think the horse has long since left the barn.

That $24M rail spur sat idle for several years after completion. About 18 months ago, with great fanfare NCDOT appointed an operator for it. Has a single shipment moved over the line since? Nothing visible on Google Maps.

I haven't heard or read anything about it, but I doubt it.

"Future I-587" signs have been posted along US-264 between Zebulon and Greenville. Pic taken by AARoads forum member Adam Prince on US-264 East, just past the NC-97 interchange in Zebulon.

It may have been covered - but why is Wade Ave not signed as an Interstate when it seems like it's built like one between 40 and 440, but instead it's "TO 40" or "TO 440". There are Aux. routes as short as less than 1 mile elsewhere...

It was, before I-40 ran through South Raleigh.
