How I feel about losing the Apple campus depends on why they chose Austin vs. the Triangle: If it was due to HB1 (and other NC legislature 'Taliban' fiascos), lack of mass transit or trends in local public schools as was reportedly the case w/ Amazon, I think we should view it as a wake-up call; if it's due to TX offering more "incentives" than NC than I say 'good riddance Apple'.
I honestly feel that Apple's best days are behind it anyway (at least until they show they can innovate w/o Steve Jobs LOL) so maybe in 5-10 years we'll see the high costs of housing (including property taxes) in the Austin area, congestion and hassles there and be thankful...

All corporate site location decisions are a combination of factors...workforce availability, quality of life factors, infrastructure, state and local tax structures, incentives, etc. But massive incentives alone can't fix other deficiencies. Apple wouldn't select a small town in northern Maine, for example, even if they received $10 billion in incentives to do so. No decision is made purely on the basis of incentives because incentives can't make a bad location a good one. The "problem" is, there is rarely just one location that will work for the company, so incentives often become a tiebreaker to choose between the possible options. Thats one reason a desirable project like this one can command eyepopping incentives.
Given the fact that Apple not only chose Austin for the big prize, but also Seattle, San Diego, Los Angeles, New York, Pittsburgh, Boulder, Colo., Boston and Portland, Ore. for other facilities, this is not good news for the Triangle.
Sad news from the Triangle and NC. Apple doesn't like HB2 and Charlotte hosting the 2020 RNC is the last straw on the camel's back. Things started falling apart around the time CLT and RNC decided to go on a date.

Yup, Triangle not even thrown a bone.
The new Austin campus is part of a wider Apple expansion that will see the tech giant build new facilities in Seattle, San Diego and Los Angeles with “over 1,000 employees” each, and add “hundreds of new jobs” in New York, Pittsburgh, Boulder, Colo., Boston and Portland, Ore., the company said. None of those facilities will be as big as the new Austin campus.
Austin takes 2/3 (Army Cyber Command HQ, Apple, Amazon) while the Triangle goes 0/3.
Personally, I think it is the relative age of the workforce around here. When these companies mention seeking a "talented workforce", I think it is code for YOUNG and talented. Not talented......with spouse, 2 kids, minivan, Costco worshiping, and driving in from their suburban sprawled home 25 miles away. This area is super family friendly......maybe to a fault???? Note recent thread about popularity of young professionals moving from here to start/launch their careers and then perhaps moving back when it is time to settle down and start their families. //www.city-data.com/forum/ralei...raduating.html
