I dont love the move. I dont hate the move.

Guessing this means were bowing out of the race for Tarasenko or Karlsson. If need be he can be off the books next year.

TDA has no trade protection. Canes can retain salary if they have a desire to use him as a chip.

That boy needs help. PIM/TOI minute player would benefit from some maturity and discipline. It is all well and good that he will stand up for his mates, but timing of some of his penalties is very poor, a la the 2022 playoffs.
Eh. Don and Rod must think the PP help is adequate rationale to take on the D risk and the immaturity.

OTOH...
He's cheaper and heathier than Erik Karlsson and about as good on D.

I'm thinking the windows for Tarasenko and Karlsson have come and gone. TD/DW's priority at this point appears to negotiate new contracts for Aho et al and the tweak the roster by trade. As for the embarrassment of riches on defense, https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/20...ina-hurricanes has nice things to say about Morrow and Nikishin as future D men. Note that Ponomaryov and Suzuki aren't in his top 10.

I'm curious how motivated Don will be to move Pesce or Skjei out, in exchange for a scoring forward.

I'm hoping he'll take the criticism to heart and learn from the comments. step back on the penalties, step up on more mature plays. realize he's part of a team and support his teammates. IMHO

And the Aho extension is done. 8 years at slightly under $10 mil per year. Management is really working to keep the core together for as long as possible.

8 years has some risk, but it's not the 11 years that Lecavalier got in 2008... that only lasted 5 before Tampa bought him out. Much less the ridiculous 15 years for DiPietro and Kovalchuk.

Giving 8 years to a 26 year old (Happy Birthday Seabass!) is substantially less risky than 11 years for a 28 year old. When Aho's contract ends, he may still have some good hockey in him yet (may even be able to sign another substantial deal). Of course injuries happen and there's some risk but IMO, but this is a win-win. Aho gets a long term deal worth more than $75 million in a familiar winning environment setting itself up well for the long term. The Canes now have their two most recogniable stars (Aho and Svech) locked for quite a while on a contract that could have been substantially more on the open market.

Tarasenko to the Sens? I did not see that coming at all.
