All I can figure is that he's confident he will put up big numbers this year and justify a 5-year deal at $7-10M a year from now, when the cap is higher. A front line of Ovechkin, Tarasenko, and Kuznetsov or Strome could be really fun to watch... if you live in DC.
It looks like it has been amended and that the Canes offer was lower.
Though at the end of the day, in considering the cap situation and his injury situation, my thinking is that he was most looking for a situation where he can rack up stats a bit better and be right back on the market next year with a much bigger and long-term payday.
Not 2023-2024, but great news for the future of PNC and the Canes:
"Dundon assumed the rights to develop the almost 80 acres around the arena when he purchased the team, but an authority consultant last year identified more than 17 stakeholders who had to sign off on the development of what is largely state-owned land. Dundon did not want to extend the team’s lease with the authority without that opportunity; the city and county did not want to allocate the renovation funds without a long-term commitment from the Hurricanes.
With the tourism-tax funds budgeted, all of that is now headed for a conclusion at Tuesday’s special authority meeting."
Will be a construction mess for years, but it will be worth it in the long run.
Maybe get Raleigh another draft or All-Star game to show it off.
