Karmanos clearly lost interest in the later years, and we have a right to be displeased about that. But he did bring the team here, and he did cover a payroll that won the Cup once and got to the finals another time.
I can't think of anything redeeming about the tenures of Muller and Peters, although I'm sure they would defend themselves by saying that Karmonos gave them a lot of AHL talent.
Luke DeCock made a good point: the goaltending has been wretched, and no number of players-only meetings will fix that. Of the 56 goaltenders in the league who have played the minimum to get into the league stats, Kochetkov ranks 54th in save percentage and Raanta ranks 56th. Andersen was 35th before he developed the medical problem. Or to put it differently, both Kochetkov and Raanta have worse numbers than Scott Darling had here -- and we considered Darling a disaster. Lack of confidence in goaltending can wreck a team's morale.
The Canes have only two goaltenders in the system. One is Yaniv Perets, who went undrafted. In 10 games with the Norfolk Admirals, his save percentage is .912. But that's ECHL. The other is Jakub Vondras, just age 19, whom the Canes drafted in round six of 2022. In 19 games with Sudbury, his save percentage is .873... not an auspicious beginning to a professional career.

But... We road those three to the ECF last year. Goaltending was not why we were swept by Florida.
I wonder if DW and RBA were confident in the tenders, of if Don just couldn't land a great goalie?
And, goalie stats are SO volatile. This year's hero can be next years failure. Not to mention injuries.
IF this team stays out of playoff contention up to the deadline, I look for some UFAs to be on the auction block for a goaltender and a scoring stud.
A goalie is only as good as his last 20 games. Darling had three very good seasons in Chicago before we signed him.
This season so far, the Canes are scoring 3.22 goals per game and are giving up 3.33 goals per game. Last season, the Canes scored 3.20 goals per game (about the same) and gave up 2.55 (much lower). We can debate why the Canes keep going cold in the playoffs, but if the present trend continues it's unclear they will even make the playoffs.
