I am making a crockpot meal of potatoes and ham. The recipe calls for soaking the sliced potatoes in water and cream of tartar before preparing to keep them white when cooking. I will probably omit that step, as I don't want to buy a whole bottle of the cream of tartar for just this one recipe. Or is there something that I may already have in my cabinet that will do the same thing?

you can try another acid (that's what cream of tartar is) but lemon juice or vinegar may have an impact on the flavor of your final product.
