I think that question should be made illegal.....just like asking someone what religion they practice.
Agreed except a doctor—for mental health purposes. Sometimes emotional stress can trigger a physical reaction. For example when separatimg from my husband I had an “acute anxiety episode” that landed me in the ER. It was relevant to the situation and related. Dentist, employer, etc.? No reason.

OMG! First time I've heard that word except in old books. The word is antiquated...very far back females were "expected" to marry and have children. So those who didn't were called spinsters or old maids. Now words like that are not used anymore. Women do not have to marry unless they want to marry and can have a child or two without any marriage if they are prepared financially.

I would never apply that term or any other to an unmarried person.

I like maiden lady. It has a pleasant connotation of finality.

Although the term isn't used these days, there is some kind of negative connotation if you have never been married by a certain age. Usually 40s. Usually the negative connotation is brought about divorcee's talking to prospective dates who have never been married.

So if there isn't a term assigned to it, still, that status has been seen as a negative or dealbreaker.

I saw one woman on Match a while ago that said "If you've never been married, then you're a loser!" Says the woman with a failed marriage under her belt.

Just another stupid label to judge someone for a stupid reason.

From a 2019 viewpoint, spinster is a pretty archaic term. 100-200 years ago, an unmarried older woman was either a teacher/nurse or did a repetitive task factory job like spinning yarn in a textile mill. Today, women are economic equals with the same (or often better) education and endless high wage career tracks if they have the ability, at least until they hit the glass ceiling. With economic parity and birth control, a woman can choose to marry or not at their whim. I know lots of women who have never been married but who have had long term relationships.

Of course, I'm an educated white collar professional so my social circle is mostly similar background. The economic rules are somewhat different if you don't have job skills and are stuck doing near-minimum wage jobs. You kind of need a room mate to make the math work. Marriage might be a necessity to get access to health insurance if you can't get a job that offers it.

So obvious. Since the kid was only 18 when he started the thread, another question comes to mind: “Is 18 too young to be hating wimmenz and dig up names to degrade them, or can a guy get turned down for many more years before giving up and blaming them?”

If any woman dies at whatever age, without getting married she'll be a "spinster" to me. No one is too old to get married or not too old to get married as far as im concerned. Only such thing as too young, imho
