On judging people based on their marital status this one always bugs me: forms that ask whether you are single, married or divorced.
You are either married or single......why is divorced even on these forms? What is the reason?
Even though I am divorced I am always tempted to answer single. LOL
Maybe I will start marking both divorced AND single.
Yeah I agree. Someone having been divorced means nothing to me and isn't a factor at all. Neither is never having been married. I care about one thing: Are they single? That's it.
Spinster in my book is right up there with Crone. Neither one is something I would want to be called. Of course I married at 16 so I guess I am safe there.
I saw spinster and thought "wow, that's an archaic and thesedayskindajerky reference", but then I saw his username and apparently he was in his 90s when he started the thread. I felt much better about a lot of things after seeing that

Exactly. There is no reason a doctor or dentist, etc. needs to know whether someone is divorced.
I think that question should be made illegal.....just like asking someone what religion they practice.
It's so sexist and so dated. Who even uses the word "spinster" anymore? What about a man who is 50 and never been married, is there a similarly pejorative word to describe him?
Who cares whether a woman (or a man), ever gets married? It's their life and their choice. and People who seem to want to label them are the ones with the problem. Not the happily single person being labelled.
An unmarried older man is a bachelor.
Any unmarried woman over 40 is a spinster. No doubt she is not as marriageable as she is “on the shelf”. There is usually a reason someone remains unmarried, usually it’s personalit flaws or a lack of basic social skills.
If one is bothered by the seemingly old fashioned nature of the world “spinster” we could use the more modern equivalent to it. Today many call these old maids Cat Ladies instead because they have traded healthy relationships for an abundance of feline companions.
Whether we are talking about spinsters, old maids or cat ladies I’m still going with 40 being the age you become one of your a never married female.
One of my friends is 43 and never married, no kids. She gets plenty of dates and I’ve never heard anyone call her a spinster. She’s a little nutty though, but that never stopped any guy.

It's more likely that they traded an unhealthy relationship for feline (or canine) love and companionship.
Many cat ladies , however, are happily married or widowed.
