At 4k a month combined, I can easily see it being done since rent would be shared. I'm not crazy enough to take off with someone I don't know to parts unknown, but I'm sure the idea sounds intriguing to many people.

Unfortunately like some of the people chiming in say; You may not have all the amenities in the cheapest places. 2k doesnt go far. Things to consider: Rent, local transportation, Food, Drink, Entertainment, Health care, Insurance, Flying to the states ocasionally. A good selection of pubs, dining and a movie theatre, clean water, good plumbing would go a long ways .

You can live in the area I live in pretty well and not have to make a ton of cash.

Now in the past 10 years or so the cost of living around here has increased, but that's because we had 3 casinos built in and around this area, which helps drive up the population, it's never felt like anything more than a small town that loves watching high school football on warm friday nights.

If you want excitement, you're within' driving distance to Cincinnati, and you are equidistant between 3 malls. And there's 3 casinos that's within' driving distance lol.

It can be done and many do. There are lots of expat and escape forums and you just need to evaluate your situation (how much you have, when do you want to do it, what are you anchors to keeping you here) and where you want and can take it. Mexico, Central and South America, the Carribean, are all viable options. Whether you go solo, with a mate, or end up finding a mate once you get there is all part of the formula.

But if you have never lived abroad, I recommend you take a 30day vacation at least 2-3 times to get a feel for living in another country. It truly involves living independently and being away from your US contacts, even though I'm sure you make new friends and neighbors, an it can be rustic or a sudden change of living suitability. For me, I need a maximum 5hr flight tether just in case of emergencies or to just get out of town. I also need satellite and internet.

Next, you gotta go from dreaming to realization by crunching the numbers and planning. You can't over plan IMO, that's what eventually makes it real. Plan, plan, plan, and think about it every day as to how and when its going to happen. Good Luck.
