I say "I love you" to my parents at the end of each phone call regardless of whether or not the conversation went well.

I know a man that is a serial cheater (he brags about his conquests to friends) and he is very sweet to his wife on Facebook. He has a lot of "I love you's" posted on her wife's wall... But I would not think all couples that say their I love you's all the time are in bad marriages.

I tell my wife I love her all the time, and we have a good marriage. It is not just words, even if its said commonly.

Some people say it just to say it. Some people don't. The phrase can be diluted.

Without actions, the phrase can become incredibly empty.

For some it's the routine.

And there's comfort amid the routine. Maybe routinization and the subsequent comfort of the exchange of the phrase are associated with love?

For the record, there are batterers whom, multiple times throughout the day, exchange "I love yous" with the married partners they abuse.

I know for a fact that some of my relatives and friends have terrible marriages, but they are saying, "I love you" to their spouse all the time.

Talk is cheap, actions are not!
The three most beautiful words in the English language must be

I l--e y-u

From a man who is totally alone.
