Probably inappropriate but I don't know many straight men that would take offense to having his genitals complimented by a woman. Now take the flipside of a male Gynecologist telling a woman she has an amazing looking vagina and you are talking a poopstorm in the making.
And yet, there should be no surprise with this. After all, the disparity is why we are having this conversation to start with.
I drove home from work and missed some of the action on this thread! I'll back track but wanted to raise a question.
CarbonCounty, 2Mares, I am sharing this experience specifically to hear your thoughts. Others as well, but these two most of all.
Back in June I had a vasectomy. (I know, that's a horrible way to start a story. Sorry. ) The nurse who prepped me was a plump woman in her late 50s, maybe even 60 or so years old. She was certainly attractive at her age, but I'm 34, so when I say "attractive" I mean in a sweet older lady kind of way. At any rate, we were alone and there I was sprawled out on her table. I was wearing work out shorts and she told me to lift my butt so she could pull them off. When she did she smiled and said, "It's beautiful." She made a few more comments along these lines. She referred to me being "young and vibrant" and "healing quickly" so I could "resume activities" with my wife. When she escorted me back to my wife she told her I was "one of the most beautiful she's ever seen" and that my wife was a lucky woman.
Now I can honestly say I was surprised by the edginess in many of her comments. I'd argue they were not professional. I think she definitely objectified me. I was a patient, a little loopy from the valium they tell you to take prior to the party starting, and in a vulnerable position.
Do you two agree? Do the specifics of my condition qualify this as "objectifying" by your standards?
Yes, objectifying, not to mention I am completely skeeved out on your behalf and would have reported her.

I think you've told this story before. It sounds familiar. Either that or that sweet older lady gets around, lol.
The key question is, did you feel threatened at all? It really sounds like she wasn't in a position to threaten you. That's the main ingredient to objectification, IMO. You need to have your dignity disrespected in some way.

I expect my gynecologist to tell me my vagina looks nice and healthy. I don't expect him to be lewd about it.

I did mention it on a different thread once before. Rather than hunt it down, I just rehashed it. Interesting thought, the presence of threat. I think the possibility of a threat certainly adds a more dynamic (for lack of a better word) element to objectification, but I don't think it's a required ingredient. If you think about your last statement, arguably she didn't respect my dignity. It doesn't take a threatening presence to not respect one's dignity.
That's my conclusion, anyway. You are certainly free to disagree and in all likelihood will. I think we are both sound enough to respect where our opinions on this subject differ.
