I was invisible to girls until my senior year of high school. I was also very shy around girls when I was a teen, but then most teenage guys I new (aside from the cool kids) were as well.

I was never an ugly duckling. I was always little and cute. As a teenager guys would tell me I looked like Linda Ronstadt. I was popular and cool as a 'bad girl'.
I became an ugly duckling in my 40s, invisible to men, kind of lost. You have this image of yourself for so many years and then you realise you aren't that same person anymore.
It has been an interesting development this aging process.
Now that I am a old Buzzard and looking back, I was not physically unattractive as a hatchling. I just lacked poise and confidence. It did not help having a brain the size of a planet. There are other things than looks that can lead to social un-acceptance. The Fable of the Ugly Duckling makes that point though.
I'm fading back into invisible mode, at least in the eyes of New England women.
Oh well, at least you're not invisible to New Zealand women
