But when you met or dated her, did she have short hair?
The ones that complained had long hair when I met and dated them, the rest had short hair when I met and dated them. I don't know anyone who cut their long hair, or grew out their short hair, in the time we were together.
I'm married but my hair is longer now than when hubby and I met. I did have a period of time in our marriage when I had it short. I was working full time, had just started school too and had two boys to take care of and the husband. I had a chin length bob.
Did you get it cut short when the boys were babies?
When my first niece was born and got to that stage when she was learning all about how to grip I almost resorted to having my whole head shaved just to be around her!
I know that's when my SIL got hers cut short! (and my brother started getting his buzz cut)
That kid (and her subsequent siblings) could grip on to a clump of hair that quick AND yank so hard it would make your eyes water!

Ha-ha, yeah, babies love grabbing hair, jewelry, or whatever else they can get a hold of.
Me either! BUT I just accept it as my cross to bear these days on account I had my hair cut short ONCE when I was about 12 when my Gran dragged me off to Joseph's of Carnegie (the butcher!) and he bowl cut it from past waist length!
I cried for MONTHS afterwards and my evil cousins torturted me endlessly about being a boy. I still have post traumatic stress from it!
I agree with onegreatnurse though, your hair does change over time and for many women it's not that they don't want to keep their hair long it's that it's not always very flattering to do so.

I don't go near them without my protective gear and even then I still come out the loser!
Being around some babies you have to approach it like a OH&S situation.
Remove all jewellery, keep hair tied back or short, wear a towel or diaper on your shoulder for the projectile vomit and keep the girls covered up if you are ample chested because babies don't seem particularly selective!
I do this with women I've dated for a while...I won't comment further...
Well, men are known for having a somewhat arrested development.
