It's been said that the sexual revolution, feminist movement, performing the chores of fatherhood and loss of complete dominance in marital decision making has lead to making marriage less appealing to men. Has the marriage rate gone down? is this why? The marriage rate has gone down by 50% since the 70s. In essence it has me wondering if the phantom 50% are basically uninterested in a relationship they don't have total domination over. This theory is pretty novel.

While I do not agree with what I have bolded, I do agree that marriage has become less appealing. It may have to do with what happens to the man if there is a divorce.

Keep in mind, also, that the number of people in this country increased since 1970 so it skews the percentages since 1970. There is already a thread on this page or the next with all the statistical data. //www.city-data.com/forum/relat...y-so-many.html

Not so much the problem with what happens to the man if there is a divorce, but the idea that although he gives his word and honors it, the other party to the marriage can unilaterally choose to end it. As long as people can end it unilaterally, what's the point? People don't go into marriages anymore expecting them to last 20 years or more. They go into marriages thinking, "If this doesn't work out, I'll just get divorced."

If you want to know what makes marriage unappealing to so many men, simply watch the wedding scene in "Old School" where Vince Vaughn is whispering to Will Ferrell.

men find getting sued 3 out of 4 times against their wishes & interests less appealing.
men find being servants in their own homes less appealing.
men find being charged with debt w/o their signature less appealing.
men find being treated like property less appealing.
other than that marriage could be great IF------

I would rephrase the question to: Do men find women less appealing in this millenium?
I'll make one simple point: I'd rather be bossed around by my cats instead of a woman.
I can only answer the question on my own behalf: yes, obviously.

I totally disagree!

There are plenty of Men IN GROWING NUMBERS that are refusing to get married for that reason and much more. There are Men that post in this forum that know this to be true.

Two men discussing the divorce of one of them and he says to the other, "You never really know a woman until you meet her in court. She cried and the judge wiped her tears with my checkbook."

Right.....though sometimes it's better for the marriage to end, but the man is reluctant to end it because he knows he'll get the shaft........
